SUMMARY:Wellness Within marks International Safe Abortion Day Sept 28
DESCRIPTION:Wellness Within is a registered non-profit organization working for reproductive justice\, prison abolition\, and health equity in K’jipuktuk\, Mi’kma’ki (Halifax\, Nova Scotia). September 28 is recognized around the world as a day to work towards safer access to abortion everywhere\, for everyone. \n\n\n\nAbortion is completely decriminalized in Canada. There are no legal limitations on gestational age\, no requirements for parental consent\, or other laws interfering with patient experience. Medication abortion is widely available through primary care providers. From a regulatory perspective\, Canada has the best access to abortion in the world. \n\n\n\nOne in three people with a uterus will have an abortion in their lifetime. Abortion is a common\, normal\, and clinically safe experience in Canada. But there is more to safety than the clinical intervention itself.  Stigma\, travel\, and personal costs impede patient safety. \n\n\n\nNon-citizens and people without provincial/territorial health cards lack access to publicly funded care. Abortion care providers are spread out across the country and may be difficult or expensive to reach. Although abortion is safe and very common\, it continues to be excluded from most health care professional educational programs. Lack of representation of Black\, Indigenous\, people of colour and 2SLGTBQIA+ people in abortion care provision results in culturally unsafe care. Even while abortion is publicly funded\, contraception is not. \n\n\n\nWe can make this better. Reproductive justice requires universal access to safe abortion and contraception care. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a noon webinar on Sept 28 to talk about how we get there. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: Dr. Lianne Yoshida\, Martha Paynter RN\, Danielle LeBlanc RN\, Clark MacIntosh\, and Claudia Chender. \n\n\n\nWhen: 12 noon Tuesday Sept 28 \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom. Register by emailing womenswellnesswithinns@gmail.com\, and you will receive the link.

SUMMARY:Rally at the DFO to protest their treatment of the livelihood fisheries
DESCRIPTION:Rally at the DFO to protest their treatment of the livelihood fisheries \n\n\n\nWHERE: DFO headquarters\, 1 Challenger Dr. Dartmouth \n\n\n\nWHEN: 11:30am Thursday\, September 23 \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS  And drums \n\n\n\nA rally Thursday is calling attention to the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s violations of Mi’kmaw Treaty Rights in recent months.   \n\n\n\nAll Mi’kmaq people have the right to fish for a moderate livelihood. This is protected by the treaties and affirmed by the Supreme Court in 1999. Treaty rights are enshrined in Canadian law through the constitution\, which is the highest law in the Canadian legal system. However\, despite these rights\, the Department of Fisheries & Ocean (DFO) has been harassing Mi’kmaw fishers –even arresting youth and a Mi’kmaw chief– asserting this treaty right.

SUMMARY:Rent control now!
DESCRIPTION:Our new government has made it clear they’re not extending rent control past the state of emergency – tenants need to fight to keep the cap in place! Join us for a community event and peaceful protest on September 23rd at the NS legislature – ALL DAY! \n\n\n\nSince the temporary rent cap was put in place\, ACORN has been hearing stories and receiving rent increases from tenants whose landlords intend to raise rents after the cap lifts. “What we’re seeing is rent increases where the landlord says ‘Your rent is going up by the legal 2%\, unless the state of emergency lifts in which case it will go up $100-$1000\,” says Halifax-Peninsula Chair Hannah Wood. “We’ve seen rent increases like these for as much as $2000.” \n\n\n\nEven though these rent increases are illegal\, they have become common since the government made it clear they don’t intend to prosecute landlords who violate the 2% rent cap.  \n\n\n\nMarjike Grijm\, Chair of the Dartmouth chapter of ACORN\, writes: “This isn’t just an issue with the downtown core\, people are even getting priced out of traditionally affordable neighbourhoods like Highfield\, where a one bedroom apartment can go for as much as $1200 these days.” She disputes claims that the housing crisis was caused by the pandemic\, “We were in a crisis before COVID. \n\n\n\nCost of living keeps skyrocketing\, rents are skyrocketing\, but our wages stay the same. Developments that go up in this city aren’t affordable units\, and landlords bring up the rent knowing full well that tenants have no other option but to pay. If we don’t fight to keep a rent cap in place\, tenants are going to keep getting priced out of the city and the province.” \n\n\n\nKeep the Rent Cap – Agenda \n\n\n\n10:00 – 10:30am: Introductions \n\n\n\n10:30 – 10:45am: Nan McFadgen (NSFL) \n\n\n\n10:45 – 10:55am: Gary Burrill (NSNDP) \n\n\n\n10:55 – 11:10am: Suzy Hansen (NSNDP) \n\n\n\n11:10 – 11:30am: Raymond Sheppard \n\n\n\n11:30 – 11:45am: Christine Saulner (CCPA) \n\n\n\n11:45am – 12:00pm: ACORN \n\n\n\n12:00 – 1:00pm: Mark Culligan (DLAS) – Tenancy Law Q+A & Loaded Ladle – Meal Serving \n\n\n\n1:00 – 2:00pm: Banner Making & Sign Pickup \n\n\n\n2:00 – 2:30pm: Vicky Levack – Universal Design & Accessible Housing \n\n\n\n2:30 – 2:45pm: Aparna Mohan (DSU) – Student Housing \n\n\n\n2:45 – 3:00pm: Amanda Sprigs (This Should Be Housing) \n\n\n\n3:00 – 3:30pm: ACORN – Housing Solutions Beyond Rent Control \n\n\n\n3:30 – 3:45pm: Campbell McClintock (OOTC/ACORN) \n\n\n\n3:45 – 4:00pm: Lina Hamid (Halifax Refugee Clinic/ACORN) \n\n\n\n4:00 – 4:30pm: Phone-In Action \n\n\n\n4:00 – 5:30pm: Pat Donovan (Music)

SUMMARY:Rally to Stop the War on the Unhoused: Dignity now!
DESCRIPTION:RALLY THIS SATURDAY! 11am—City Hall \n\n\n\n•To protest the city’s apathy-based approach to houselessness \n\n\n\n•To demand that the unhoused be treated with dignity \n\n\n\n•To call for a moratorium on evictions of those living in tents & crisis shelters \n\n\n\n#HousingForAll #HousingIsAHumanRight \n\n\n\nfb event here \n\n\n\nThis Saturday marks one month since the brutal evictions against unhoused people living in Halifax Municipal parks. Since that time\, this city’s unhoused residents have lived in fear and constant anxiety of having nowhere to go to safely shelter: the shelters are full\, tents & crisis shelters are criminalized\, and hotel rooms are unavailable and in many cases\, inappropriate and unreliable.  \n\n\n\nPeoples Park was created out of the need for a safe space to shelter\, and is a compassionate response to the crisis that the city created with these evictions. Since our founding on August 18\, we have grown to over 20 residents as the city continues to criminalize the survival strategies of its unhoused residents. Further\, the careless manner in which the city promised and managed hotel rooms as an interim solution has only exacerbated trauma and distrust.  \n\n\n\nWe are demanding a moratorium on evictions from municipal properties\, as existed prior to the Aug 18 evictions. We need an apology from the city and a promise to do better\, to start to repair the harm caused by the indignity with which unhoused people have been treated. And we need all levels of government and social services to work towards finding appropriate interim solutions to the houseless crisis\, as well as long term options such as supportive housing and truly affordable housing.

SUMMARY:4th Annual Halifax Anarchist Bookfair
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/354815359446066/ \n\n\n\n~ For anarchists\, and those curious about anarchism ~ \n\n\n\nFREE \, at the old Central Library grounds on Spring Garden Road\, in Kjipuktuk\, Unceded Mi’kmaq territory \n\n\n\nWe will not go back to “normal”. The pandemic has only intensified social control and surveillance\, capitalism and colonialism\, with those in power deepening their pockets through intensified industrial extraction\, skyrocketing housing prices\, and intolerable working conditions. While the defenders of this racist colonial system look out for their own interests\, we know that we are the ones who must look out for and care for each other. The roots of ecological destruction\, poverty\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, police violence\, patriarchy\, etc lie within the construct of authority itself. Anarchism helps us to understand the roots of these systems of power\, articulate our desires for self-determination\, and dream of a world where all are free. It is crucial in these times that we find each other\, create space to remember what liberation can feel like\, share our grief and rage\, and bring collective energy into our struggles. The bookfair is for anarchists\, those curious about anarchism\, book lovers\, and anyone simply questioning authority. It will feature publishers and book distributors\, vendors\, artists\, and facilitators from all over North America/Turtle Island; the day/weekend will include workshops\, discussions\, kids’ activities\, art exhibits\, parties and more! \n\n\n\nWorkshop Schedule:10:30-11:45*Freedom Means Decolonization*With Darlene Gilbert & Tayla Fern Paul12-1pm*Green Anarchy: Freedom at the Ends of the World*https://www.facebook.com/events/846714186205438*PROTEST\, DIRECT ACTION & CRIMINAL LAW: Legal Rights\, Who’s Vulnerable\, Consequences & Possibilities*https://www.facebook.com/events/5291193683479801-2pm*Rhythms of Resistance*https://www.facebook.com/events/3879315860701892-3:15pm*Abolition as Collective Liberation*https://www.facebook.com/events/1419303980976763:30pm-4:30pm*“You Can’t Police Yourself Out of a Pandemic: Anti-Authoritarian Strategies in an Age of Crisis”*https://www.facebook.com/events/45768483656991624:45pm-6pm*Housing Crisis\, What’s Next? with Halifax Mutual Aid*https://www.facebook.com/events/820413472010174 \n\n\n\nFor a more Anarchic Halifax\, and a freer\, more joyful world \n\n\n\ncontact: halifaxanarchistbookfair@riseup.ne

SUMMARY:Emancipation Day Virtual Session
DESCRIPTION:YOU’RE VIRTUALLY INVITED!!! A live-stream presentation with Dr. Charmaine Nelson\, Professor of Art History and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Transatlantic Black Diasporic Art and Community Engagement at NSCAD University.   Please tune in and share with your networks as we continue our learning around Emancipation Day. Details below – \n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, August 10th \n\n\n\nTime: 6:00 p.m. (ADT) \n\n\n\nLocation: Nova Scotia Culture Facebook page – www.facebook.com/novascotiaculture \n\n\n\nShe will discuss the complexity of slavery in Canada to help us comprehend what former enslaved people celebrated in 1834 with slavery’s demise in the British Empire.  \n\n\n\nHave a question for Dr. Nelson? Drop in it the comments section on Facebook or send in advance to Aja Joshi at Aja.Joshi@novascotia.ca. #EmancipationDayNS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay: Tuesday\, August 10th. \n\n\n\nTime: 6:00pm (one hour) \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Charmaine Nelson\, NSCAD \n\n\n\nHost: Aja Joshi \n\n\n\nModerator: DeRico Symonds \n\n\n\nOpening Remarks: Deputy of CCH \n\n\n\nTitle: An Introduction to Canadian and Nova Scotian Slavery \n\n\n\nSummary: \n\n\n\nAs Nova Scotians and Canadians commemorate Emancipation Day on August 1st\, 2021\, it is important to pose the question – emancipation from what? Canadians are largely ignorant of any knowledge of Canadian Slavery because it is simply not a part of our normal curricula in grade school\, high school\, or higher education. Yet\, the historical documentation of this two-hundred-year history under two empires (Britain and France) has been\, for the most part\, well preserved in various museums and archives across the country. \n\n\n\nThis talk contests our customary national celebration of the Underground Railroad (1834-1865) and the stories we tell ourselves about being “the good guys” who saved enslaved African Americans. Instead\, it considers the nature\, scale\, and complexity of slavery in Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada in order to comprehend and appreciate what formerly enslaved people celebrated in 1834 with slavery’s demise in the British Empire. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: \n\n\n\nDr. Charmaine Nelsonis a Professor of Art History and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Transatlantic Black Diasporic Art and Community Engagement at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University in Halifax where she is also the founding director of the Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery. Prior to this appointment she worked at McGill University (Montreal) for seventeen years (2003-2020) and at Western University for two (2001-2003). \n\n\n\nNelson has made ground-breaking contributions to the fields of the Visual Culture of Slavery\, Race and Representation\, and Black Canadian Studies. She has published seven books including The Color of Stone: Sculpting the Black Female Subject in Nineteenth Century America (2007)\, Slavery\, Geography\, and Empire in Nineteenth-Century Marine Landscapes of Montreal and Jamaica (2016)\, and Towards an African Canadian Art History: Art\, Memory\, and Resistance (2018). \n\n\n\nNelson has given over 260 lectures\, papers\, and talks across Canada\, and the USA\, and in Mexico\, Denmark\, Germany\, Italy\, Norway\, Spain\, the UK\, Central America\, and the Caribbean. She is also actively engaged with lay audiences through her media work including ABC\, CBC\, CTV\, BBC One\, and PBS. She blogs for the Huffington Post Canada and writes for The Walrus. Nelson has held several prestigious fellowships and appointments including a Caird Senior Research Fellowship\, National Maritime Museum\, Greenwich\, UK (2007) and a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair\, University of California – Santa Barbara (2010). She was recently the William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University (2017-2018) and in 2021 she will be a fellow at Bard Graduate Center in New York City.

SUMMARY:76th anniversary of Hiroshima Day in Halifax/Kjipuktuk
DESCRIPTION:Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace will  commemorate the 76th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of  Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Friday\, August 6\, in Halifax/Kjipuktuk\, Nova Scotia\, from 11:00 to 12:00 in Grand Parade Square. We gratefully acknowledge the leadership by HRM Council and the honourable Mayor Mike Savage declaring August 6 as a Day of Peace.  \n\n\n\nWe  also wish to acknowledge the significance of HRM’s one-year anniversary of adopting the resolution to endorse the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and to call on the Government of Canada to support and sign this multilateral agreement – an agreement that “may prove instrumental in determining the fate of the planet” by establishing “a clear and comprehensive prohibition against the most dangerous and destructive weapons on Earth.”  Both of these actions\, declaring a Day of Peace and supporting the Nuclear Ban Treaty speak to a council willing to work for justice and conflict resolution without violence and threat. HRM has earned a seat at the table of Mayors for Peace internationally (a coalition of over 7\,000 municipalities from over 160 countries working to build a nuclear-weapons-free world). Halifax is a beacon for cities across Turtle Island.  \n\n\n\nOn behalf of Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace we extend this invitation.  Please join us at Grand Parade Square from 11 to 12 on August 6\, 2021 to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  We ask any participants to adhere to Covid protocols and ensure social distancing. Our commemoration specifically will be dedicated to Setsuko Thurlow and ‘Strong Women’ who strive for peace.  \n\n\n\nSetsuko Thurlow\, now a Canadian citizen who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a 13-year-old. She has devoted her life to nuclear abolition\, is a recipient of the Order of Canada and was honoured\, along with Ms. Beatrice Fihn\, to co-accept the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.  (Although she will not be able to travel to Halifax at this time\, we will share our recording of the event on-line.) \n\n\n\nThe Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons  entered into force on January 22\, 2021 The TPNW also known as the Nuclear Ban treaty\, is the first legally binding international agreement that seeks to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons. Canada has yet to affirm its own official policy on non-proliferation and disarmament by signing and ratifying the TPNW.  \n\n\n\nNSVOW extends this invitation to all women in politics  to speak about how to create a safe and secure future for us all with non-violence. We hope all levels of governance – band\, municipal\, federal and provincial will be represented. We hope all parties and independent candidates will join us. We offer a brief  open mic opportunity after speeches and musical interludes\, including participation by the Halifax Raging Grannies.  \n\n\n\nIn Peace and Friendship \n\n\n\nNova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace
