SUMMARY:Bringing Down Barriers: Black and Indigenous Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/145396244124416/ \n\n\n\nOnline: us02web.zoom.us \n\n\n\nAdvance registration required. Register at the Zoom link provided in this event posting. April 2021 is the 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, a time to honour the voices and experiences of victims and survivors\, and to bring awareness to issues relating to sexualized violence. Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual assault\, harassment\, and abuse. This year\, Avalon has partnered with other community organizations working to support survivors of sexualized violence\, to bring people together for conversation\, learning and strategizing on bringing down barriers to service access. “Black & Indigenous Survivors” is the first of these conversations. \n\n\n\nThis panel discussion will highlight the experiences of Black and Indigenous survivors of sexualized and gender-based violence\, the barriers to accessing services and supports\, and ideas on how to offer inclusive and culturally responsive services. \n\n\n\nThe panel will feature:Debra Paris Perry\, who has been the senior peer outreach worker at the YWCA for almost 5 years\, servicing young people who have experienced sexual violence in workshops and circle groups. She is an active voice in the community with lived experience\, which makes her a strong leader. She spends her free time crafting\, enjoys spending time with puppies\, but most of all she loves being with all her family. \n\n\n\nDenise John\, who is Mi’kmaw from Conne River First Nation\, a Mi’kmaw community on the South coast of Newfoundland. She is a woman’s traditional dancer who enjoys traveling to many First Nations communities to attend the Mawiomi’ (gatherings). She takes pride in her Mi’kmaw culture and shares many of her teachings with others. Denise works at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre as a Victim Support Navigator. \n\n\n\nJustine Colley-Leger\, who is a wife\, mother\, community advocate\, and is the African Nova Scotia Sexual Violence Community Engagement Coordinator with the East Preston Daycare and Family Resource Centre. \n\n\n\nThe panel will be moderated by Shianne Gordon. For the last 5 years Shianne has been an outreach worker at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Halifax and is currently the Community Navigator for Avalon. She works in targeted communities supporting women and young people in overcoming barriers to accessing services. She believes that everyone has the right to heal\, not just survive. Her hobbies are creating poetry & music\, watching scary movies\, and fishing in the summer. \n\n\n\nThe Avalon Sexual Assault Centre is a feminist organization working to eliminate sexual assault/abuse\, and to change the current socio-political culture that fosters sexism\, social injustice and other forms of oppression.

That year\, she was also the only woman elected among 32 Members of Parliament in Atlantic Canada. \n\n\n\n𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝘆:– Stephen Kimber\, Author\, 𝘼𝙡𝙚𝙭𝙖!: 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙨– and more special guests\, TBA \n\n\n\n𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗤&𝗔Questions for author Stephen Kimber should be submitted in advance by emailing digital [at] gooselane.com. Please use the subject line “Alexa Q&A.” \n\n\n\n𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻The event will be streaming on YouTube Live.https://youtu.be/MnHXT2h1Fao \n\n\n\nYou can register in advance through Eventbrite to receive a notification before the event goes live.https://www.eventbrite.ca/…/alexa-live-book-launch-with… \n\n\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸In this authorized biography\, veteran author Stephen Kimber chronicles Alexa’s life and political career and with it\, weaves a narrative of the changing attitudes towards women in politics\, from her early battles as the lone female MLA in a hostile Nova Scotian legislature to her leadership of the federal NDP to her role as senior stateswoman in Jack Layton’s shadow cabinet. Along the way\, Stephen delves into Alexa’s personal life to uncover the origins of her political career: her upbringing in a wealthy family committed to progressive politics\, her tightknit circles of female friends\, her personal metamorphosis from “wife-of” to “leader-of\,” and her emergence as a political leader whose importance goes beyond partisan politics. DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1153368338461917/ \n\n\n\nAdvance registration required. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Avalon has partnered with other community organizations working to support survivors of sexualized violence\, to bring people together for conversation\, learning and strategizing on bringing down barriers to service access. “2SLGBTQIA+ Youth” is the third of these conversations.Topics discussed will include ways to offer comprehensive care when youth may not have stable or supportive home/family spaces\, the importance of autonomous self-direction and informed consent modalities\, up-to-date language\, and best practices in supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ community members (Two Spirit\, Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Queer/Questioning\, Intersex\, Asexual\, plus (+) other ways individuals express their gender and sexuality outside heteronormativity and the gender binary). \n\n\n\nThe Youth Project’s mission is to make Nova Scotia a safer\, healthier\, and happier place for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth through support\, education\, resource expansion and community development. The Youth Project is a multi-service organization hosting an education team\, programming team\, and support services worker with an aim to further the inclusion and wellness of 2SLGBTQIA+ under the age of 25\, foster 2SLGBTQIA+ knowledge exchange and training\, increase access to public services\, and provide social and cultural programs/services/celebrations for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and their communities. \n\n\n\nThe webinar will feature Carmel Farahbakhsh\, (they/them) who is a community worker/ educator\, experimental violinist\, and artist. They have collaborated on The Khyber Centre For The Arts board for three years\, and are enjoying their new position as co-director of local music festival EVERYSEEKER. They also recently transitioned from a five-year term coordinating South House Sexual and Gender Resource Centre to working as the executive director at The Youth Project\, seeing a direct link between this community work and access to creative spaces/ arts community. Carmel also actively collaborates with local initiatives with the aim to create wider 2SQTBIPOC support systems locally. \n\n\n\nThe Avalon Sexual Assault Centre is a feminist organization working to eliminate sexual assault/abuse\, and to change the current socio-political culture that fosters sexism\, social injustice and other forms of oppression.

SUMMARY:Bringing Down Barriers: Not Without Us
DESCRIPTION:Advance registration required. Register at the Zoom link provided in this event posting. \n\n\n\nOnline: us02web.zoom.us \n\n\n\nApril 2021 is the 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, a time to honour the voices and experiences of victims and survivors\, and to bring awareness to issues relating to sexualized violence. Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual assault\, harassment\, and abuse. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Avalon has partnered with other community organizations working to support survivors of sexualized violence\, to bring people together for conversation\, learning and strategizing on bringing down barriers to service access. “Not Without Us” is the second of these conversations. \n\n\n\nThe Not Without Us Project gathered and shared the stories of women with disabilities in Nova Scotia who experienced violence\, as well as the staff at organizations that work with survivors. In the project’s final report\, there are recommendations we hope will remove barriers and help get these women out of situations of violence. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, project coordinator Suzanne Rent will discuss the findings of the report and the recommendations. Sherry Costa\, provincial coordinator of Nova Scotia League for Equal Opportunities\, and one of the founders of the Not Without Us project\, will talk about the background and impact of this work. \n\n\n\nThe Not Without Project is funded by a grant under the Standing Together initiative at the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women. \n\n\n\nSuzanne Rent is a journalist and researcher in Halifax. She has worked in the media since 2001 and currently is a regular contributor to the Halifax Examiner. SUMMARY:Kate Macdonald Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:oin us on April 15th from 5PM – 7PM for an artist talk with our current artist-in-residence\, Halifax-based artist and activist KATE MACDONALD.This event will include ASL interpretation and will take place over Zoom. Pre-register at https://bit.ly/2PzFpGE… \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist: \n\n\n\nKate Macdonald was born and raised in Halifax\, NS. Kate is proudly African Nova Scotian. She studied Performance Acting at Ryerson University in Toronto\, ON. At the end of 2016 with the political climate swiftly changing around her (en election of a new president)\, she knew her reaction had to be radical. Out of this desire to make a change\, she Founded and Created The Magic Project. Which focuses on bringing marginalized brilliance to the forefront of social media using the arts. Kate is also a Community Facilitator and Youth Programmer. She hopes to continue creating workshops\, holding space for community discussions and empowering youth through celebration. Her art practice has always included photography\, poetry and performance theatre. But she has been long fascinated with the many avenues that art presents for self-expression\, especially around the themes of justice\, healing\, joy\, magic and ancestral connection. Recently\, Kate\, Trayvone Clayton & DeRico Symonds created an African Nova Scotian community based\, youth-led initiative called The Game Changers. After a year of working together in advocacy\, activism\, and community they decided to collaborate officially. Kate is currently the Branch Manager at the North Branch Memorial Library – a branch that has long been a staple in the African Nova Scotian community…. \n\n\n\nAbout Eyelevel Artist Run Centre: \n\n\n\nEyelevel is an arts worker/artist-run organization mandated to present and support the development of socially-relevant and thought-provoking artistic practices locally\, regionally and nationally. Eyelevel supports artists through residencies\, mentorship\, publishing and presentation outside of a traditional gallery context that is accompanied by care-oriented and trauma-informed artistic\, professional and personal support. Eyelevel aims to raise public awareness and capacity of our local arts community; particularly artists and arts workers who have been historically underserved and misrepresented in the contemporary art dialogue. Eyelevel strives to be a connector between artists\, communities and the broader public\, to constantly question the balance of power and work against systemic oppression and discrimination by centring anti-violence and pro-survivor practices. Eyelevel works in treaty to build a more inclusive and caring world through art\, and to advance positive change within the arts through its operations\, policies and programming.

SUMMARY:Equity Watch rally to tell Nova Scotia Human Rights commission\, do your job!
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, April 8\, Noon to 1 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Park Lane Mall\, 5657 Spring Garden Rd (MASKED AND SOCIAL-DISTANCED!) \n\n\n\nThree and a half years ago\, Christine Shupe of Halifax left her job at Beaver Enviro because of what she claims was sexual harassment by the boss. \n\n\n\nShe filed her complaint at the NS Human Rights Commission\, but the Commission dragged its feet – as usual — in pursuing the case.  Finally the case moved forward after Shupe contacted the NS Ombudsman’s office. \n\n\n\nThe Commission sent her case to a public Board of Inquiry. But last month the Board dismissed her complaint because the company had not been named correctly.  Though Beaver Enviro is the name on the building\, the company’s registered name is 2557617 Nova Scotia. In fact\, the problem with the name was identified just 3 months after Shupe approached the Commission. \n\n\n\nBecause of this technical mistake\, Shupe’s case of sex discrimination was tossed. The Commission is not allowed by law to alter its original complaint\, and because the harassment incidents had taken place more than 12 months before\, the Commission could not file a new complaint. \n\n\n\nSays Equity Watch spokesperson Judy Haiven\, “That would not have happened\, for example\, in New Brunswick whose Human Rights Act allows: ‘18(2) The Commission may extend the time for the filing of a complaint if\, in the opinion of the Commission\, the circumstances warrant it.’ \n\n\n\n“Equity Watch is not happy to hear of yet another case of the NS Human Rights Commission dragging its feet\, and losing the chance to pursue violators. This shows that Nova Scotia’s human rights regime is way past due for an overhaul.” \n\n\n\nEquity Watch’s report “Justice Impeded: A Critique of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Regime” details case after case of the NS Human Rights Commission not doing its job – and dismissing cases on a technicality\, or through sloppiness or ignoring timelines.   \n\n\n\nEquity Watch is asking the NS Human Rights Commission and the Nova Scotia government to simply do their job. That is the least they owe Nova Scotians.

SUMMARY:Bringing Down Barriers: 2SLGBTQ+ In Prison
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/973407346730903 \n\n\n\nAdvance registration required. \n\n\n\n“2SLGBTQ+ In Prison” is the first of these conversations.2SLGBTQ+ people (Two Spirit\, Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Queer/Questioning\, plus (+) other ways individuals express their gender and sexuality outside heteronormativity and the gender binary) experience high levels of policing and criminalization\, arrest and incarceration. Once inside prison\, 2SLGBTQ+ people are subjected to violence by both prison staff and other prisoners. \n\n\n\nIn Nova Scotia\, very little is known about the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ within the Nova Scotia criminal justice system\, which is why Coverdale launched a research project exploring just that. The key findings will be discussed and presented\, as well as recommendations on how our communities can advocate for justice and transformation within our justice system. Project participant\, advocate and survivor Sara Tessier will share her first-hand knowledge of violence inside prison and shed light on the ways in which sexualized violence permeates carceral settings. \n\n\n\nAsh Avery (she/her) is a queer feminist writer\, advocate and mother. She has been working with and for criminalized and incarcerated women and gender diverse folks in Nova Scotia since 2015. She is the Executive Director of Coverdale Courtwork Society\, a Halifax based non-profit organization that provides supports and services to women and gender diverse people involved in the criminal justice system. For the past two years she has been researching the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in the criminal justice system\, with the guidance of Dr. Rachel Zellers and El Jones. Her work to support the exodus of provincial prisoners from jail during the COVID-19 pandemic won the Michael McDonald access to justice award. Recently\, Ash founded “Caitlan’s Place” –a 6 bed bail house for women and gender diverse individuals in Halifax. \n\n\n\nSara A. Tessier (she/her) is a social justice advocate with lived experience who has spent the last 5 years working with and on behalf of some of the most marginalized\, victimized\, criminalized\, and institutionalized men\, women and youth in Canada. She has worked on the JEC Housing project with John Howard\, Elizabeth Fry Mainland Nova Scotia\, and Coverdale Courtwork Society in supporting people exiting provincial jail during the Covid-19 pandemic. She is an advisor for African Nova Scotian Affairs Mobilizing Partnership Program\, a committee member for YWCA’s Trafficking & Exploitation Services System LGBTQ+ cultural group and sits on the CAEFS Lived Experience Committee. She is currently a Peer Mentor with Coverdale Courtwork Society and also works with the G.A.T.E team with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia. \n\n\n\nThe Avalon Sexual Assault Centre is a feminist organization working to eliminate sexual assault/abuse\, and to change the current socio-political culture that fosters sexism\, social injustice and other forms of oppression. \n\n\n\nOnline: us02web.zoom.us

SUMMARY:EMERGENCY RALLY in front of HPD Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – Many African Nova Scotians continue to have their rights violated by those said to “Serve and Protect” \n\n\n\nRecently a video surfaced showing a HPD Police Officer apparently threatening to shot an unarmed African Nova Scotian male with hands held high above his head. This apparent abuse of power seems to have become commonplace with a number of HPD Police Officer without any meaning discipline or deterrence.    \n\n\n\nYet\, Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella apologized on Nov 29\, 2019\, to the African Nova Scotian community for illegal street checks based on racism and yet there has been no meaningful action or retraining taken to change the negative mindset of that seems to be prevalent among a number of officers. \n\n\n\nMany African Nova Scotians have been and continue to be traumatized by the racism and hate they continue to endure on a daily basis.  \n\n\n\nPolice like all citizens must be held accountable for their actions\, and should not be putting community members at risk in any way shape or form. \n\n\n\nMany African Nova Scotians do not even make it to first base in the complaint process and “asking Colonel Sanders to feel or have compassion for chickens “ does not seem to be working. \n\n\n\nBased on the most recent display of excessive force and outward gross disrespect\, a number of African Nova Scotians will hold an EMERGENCY RALLY in front of HPD Headquarters on Gottingen Street in Halifax this Thursday April 01\, 2021\, at 2pm. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Raymond Sheppard raymondsheppard@eastlink.ca
