SUMMARY:Equity Watch rally to tell Nova Scotia Human Rights commission\, do your job!
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, April 8\, Noon to 1 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Park Lane Mall\, 5657 Spring Garden Rd (MASKED AND SOCIAL-DISTANCED!) \n\n\n\nThree and a half years ago\, Christine Shupe of Halifax left her job at Beaver Enviro because of what she claims was sexual harassment by the boss. \n\n\n\nShe filed her complaint at the NS Human Rights Commission\, but the Commission dragged its feet – as usual — in pursuing the case.  Finally the case moved forward after Shupe contacted the NS Ombudsman’s office. \n\n\n\nThe Commission sent her case to a public Board of Inquiry. But last month the Board dismissed her complaint because the company had not been named correctly.  Though Beaver Enviro is the name on the building\, the company’s registered name is 2557617 Nova Scotia. In fact\, the problem with the name was identified just 3 months after Shupe approached the Commission. \n\n\n\nBecause of this technical mistake\, Shupe’s case of sex discrimination was tossed. The Commission is not allowed by law to alter its original complaint\, and because the harassment incidents had taken place more than 12 months before\, the Commission could not file a new complaint. \n\n\n\nSays Equity Watch spokesperson Judy Haiven\, “That would not have happened\, for example\, in New Brunswick whose Human Rights Act allows: ‘18(2) The Commission may extend the time for the filing of a complaint if\, in the opinion of the Commission\, the circumstances warrant it.’ \n\n\n\n“Equity Watch is not happy to hear of yet another case of the NS Human Rights Commission dragging its feet\, and losing the chance to pursue violators. This shows that Nova Scotia’s human rights regime is way past due for an overhaul.” \n\n\n\nEquity Watch’s report “Justice Impeded: A Critique of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Regime” details case after case of the NS Human Rights Commission not doing its job – and dismissing cases on a technicality\, or through sloppiness or ignoring timelines.   \n\n\n\nEquity Watch is asking the NS Human Rights Commission and the Nova Scotia government to simply do their job. That is the least they owe Nova Scotians.

SUMMARY:Bringing Down Barriers: 2SLGBTQ+ In Prison
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/973407346730903 \n\n\n\nAdvance registration required. Register at the Zoom link provided in this event posting. April 2021 is the 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, a time to honour the voices and experiences of victims and survivors\, and to bring awareness to issues relating to sexualized violence. Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual assault\, harassment\, and abuse. This year\, Avalon has partnered with other community organizations working to support survivors of sexualized violence\, to bring people together for conversation\, learning and strategizing on bringing down barriers to service access. \n\n\n\n“2SLGBTQ+ In Prison” is the first of these conversations.2SLGBTQ+ people (Two Spirit\, Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Queer/Questioning\, plus (+) other ways individuals express their gender and sexuality outside heteronormativity and the gender binary) experience high levels of policing and criminalization\, arrest and incarceration. Once inside prison\, 2SLGBTQ+ people are subjected to violence by both prison staff and other prisoners. \n\n\n\nIn Nova Scotia\, very little is known about the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ within the Nova Scotia criminal justice system\, which is why Coverdale launched a research project exploring just that. The key findings will be discussed and presented\, as well as recommendations on how our communities can advocate for justice and transformation within our justice system. Project participant\, advocate and survivor Sara Tessier will share her first-hand knowledge of violence inside prison and shed light on the ways in which sexualized violence permeates carceral settings. \n\n\n\nAsh Avery (she/her) is a queer feminist writer\, advocate and mother. She has been working with and for criminalized and incarcerated women and gender diverse folks in Nova Scotia since 2015. She is the Executive Director of Coverdale Courtwork Society\, a Halifax based non-profit organization that provides supports and services to women and gender diverse people involved in the criminal justice system. For the past two years she has been researching the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in the criminal justice system\, with the guidance of Dr. Rachel Zellers and El Jones. Her work to support the exodus of provincial prisoners from jail during the COVID-19 pandemic won the Michael McDonald access to justice award. Recently\, Ash founded “Caitlan’s Place” –a 6 bed bail house for women and gender diverse individuals in Halifax. \n\n\n\nSara A. Tessier (she/her) is a social justice advocate with lived experience who has spent the last 5 years working with and on behalf of some of the most marginalized\, victimized\, criminalized\, and institutionalized men\, women and youth in Canada. She has worked on the JEC Housing project with John Howard\, Elizabeth Fry Mainland Nova Scotia\, and Coverdale Courtwork Society in supporting people exiting provincial jail during the Covid-19 pandemic. She is an advisor for African Nova Scotian Affairs Mobilizing Partnership Program\, a committee member for YWCA’s Trafficking & Exploitation Services System LGBTQ+ cultural group and sits on the CAEFS Lived Experience Committee. She is currently a Peer Mentor with Coverdale Courtwork Society and also works with the G.A.T.E team with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia. \n\n\n\nThe Avalon Sexual Assault Centre is a feminist organization working to eliminate sexual assault/abuse\, and to change the current socio-political culture that fosters sexism\, social injustice and other forms of oppression. \n\n\n\nOnline: us02web.zoom.us

SUMMARY:EMERGENCY RALLY in front of HPD Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – Many African Nova Scotians continue to have their rights violated by those said to “Serve and Protect” \n\n\n\nRecently a video surfaced showing a HPD Police Officer apparently threatening to shot an unarmed African Nova Scotian male with hands held high above his head. This apparent abuse of power seems to have become commonplace with a number of HPD Police Officer without any meaning discipline or deterrence.    \n\n\n\nYet\, Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella apologized on Nov 29\, 2019\, to the African Nova Scotian community for illegal street checks based on racism and yet there has been no meaningful action or retraining taken to change the negative mindset of that seems to be prevalent among a number of officers. \n\n\n\nMany African Nova Scotians have been and continue to be traumatized by the racism and hate they continue to endure on a daily basis.  \n\n\n\nPolice like all citizens must be held accountable for their actions\, and should not be putting community members at risk in any way shape or form. \n\n\n\nMany African Nova Scotians do not even make it to first base in the complaint process and “asking Colonel Sanders to feel or have compassion for chickens “ does not seem to be working. \n\n\n\nBased on the most recent display of excessive force and outward gross disrespect\, a number of African Nova Scotians will hold an EMERGENCY RALLY in front of HPD Headquarters on Gottingen Street in Halifax this Thursday April 01\, 2021\, at 2pm. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Raymond Sheppard raymondsheppard@eastlink.ca

SUMMARY:Demonstration of solidarity: Save Little Harbour/Owls Head from becoming golf courses
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/756946498284233/ \n\n\n\nOn the morning of April 1\, 2021\, we will gather at “The Law Courts”\,1815 Upper Water St. in support of the applicants who are trying to save Owls Head Provincial Park. \n\n\n\nLawyer Jamie Simpson is representing Bob Bancroft & Eastern Shore Forest Watch Association\, as they challenge two separate secret decisions by (then Minister of Lands and Forestry) Iain Rankin: The decision to secretly delist Owls Head Provincial Park on March 13\, 2019 and the decision to entertain a Letter of Offer with a developer on December 16\, 2019. \n\n\n\nThe government claims that Owls Head Provincial Park was never protected. But for the last 45 years\, numerous government policies and documents have identified it as a park. As Justice Coady wrote in his decision allowing this lawsuit to go forward\, “The public had every reason to assume Owl’s Head was a Provincial Park and\, therefore\, attracted protections not available on Crown lands.” (Bancroft v. Nova Scotia (Land and Forestry) 2020 NSSC 214)In solidarity with the applicants’ judicial review\, we will have a small gathering of supporters outside the courthouse on the morning of April 1\, 2021. The court case starts at 9:30 AM. \n\n\n\nThe outdoor gathering will be socially distanced and supporters will need to wear masks. \n\n\n\nStop the Sale. \n\n\n\nSave Owls Head Provincial Park.Social distancing guidelines:You need to follow social distancing guidelines to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. This means limiting your contact with other people and keeping a physical distance of 2 metres (6 feet) away from others. \n\n\n\nTo protect yourself and others you need to: \n\n\n\nStay 2 metres (6 feet) away from other people as much as possible\, unless you’re in your close social group keep your close social group consistent\, as much as possible make informed choices about who and how to interact with each other (consider age\, occupation and health conditions) make sure you follow social distancing guidelines for gathering limits\, businesses\, organizations and workplaces. The Youth Rally\, Rally at North Mountain and the last rally at “The Law Courts” were a success. Stay within your own group\, stay within 6 feet away from each group and wear a mask. We have done this three times with much success. \n\n\n\nWe will keep an eye on any changes to the social distancing guidelines and if we need to cancel we will at the time. For anyone who can’t attend\, you can email or snail mail support letters to Lawyer Jamie Simpson\, Eastern Shore Forest Watch Association and Bob Bancroft.

This judicial review is not about golf; it’s about transparency\,procedural fairness\, and public consultation. \n\n\n\nIn Nova Scotia\, nearly half of our 206 provincial parks are awaitingdesignation\, the same way that Owls Head Provincial Park was before itwas secretly delisted. This sets a dangerous precedent that couldfurther jeopardize our protected areas network. \n\n\n\nPlease come to show your support for our parks and protected areas ifyou can. SUMMARY:Moratorium Now! Stop Clear-Cutting Crown Land in Unceded Mi’kma’ki
DESCRIPTION:Forest protector Jacob Fillmore has been camped outdoors in front of City Hall and Province House for 12 weeks now\, urging a temporary moratorium on clear-cutting on crown land in unceded Mi’kmak’i. He has recently escalated his tactics and is now refusing food until this moratorium is put in place\, citing the plight of the critically endangered Mainland Moose. We need to support Jacob in his hunger strike and ensure that the province prioritizes addressing his concerns\, especially as the province has dragged its feet on implementing recommended forest management reforms for years. Iain Rankin has repeatedly pledged a more aggressive timeline in implementing the Lahey Report*\, which prescribed these reforms\, but current clear-cutting practices run counter to the report’s recommendations. \n\n\n\nAmong other things\, the Lahey report recommended that the DLF immediately prioritize the designation and protection of core habitat for at risk species on crown land. Despite accepting this recommendation the government has yet to implement it. Now the forests are in worse shape than they were two years ago. We can’t continue to stall and log. There could be fewer than 100 Mainland Moose left in Nova Scotia\, according to recent surveys conducted for the provincial government\, as reported by the CBC. Last year\, forest protectors were arrested for blocking access to loggers attempting to clearcut land that is known Mainland Moose habitat. A court injunction effectively removed the protectors from their blockade\, and now urgent Provincial government action is needed to protect these critical habitats. Without a moratorium on clear cutting NOW\, most (if not all) old forest growth in this province will be lost before Lahey’s recommendations are implemented. \n\n\n\n_________________________________* See “Lahey Forestry Report: The Good\, the Bad & the Missing” by EAC’s Raymond Plourde https://ecologyaction.ca/forestryreport

SUMMARY:BSAC 2021 Elimination of Racial Discrimination Day Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to watch and discuss a documentary film “Journey to Justice”  \n\n\n\nThis documentary pays tribute to a group of Canadians who took racism to court. They are Canada’s unsung heroes in the fight for Black civil rights. Focusing on the 1930s to the 1950s\, this film documents the struggle of 6 people who refused to accept inequality. Featured here\, among others\, are Viola Desmond\, a woman who insisted on keeping her seat at the Roseland movie theatre in New Glasgow\, Nova Scotia in 1946 rather than moving to the section normally reserved for the city’s Black population\, and Fred Christie\, who took his case to the Supreme Court after being denied service at a Montreal tavern in 1936. These brave pioneers helped secure justice for all Canadians. Their stories deserve to be told.  \n\n\n\nAttached is the poster.
