DESCRIPTION:Forest protector Jacob Fillmore has been camped outdoors in front of City Hall and Province House for 12 weeks now\, urging a temporary moratorium on clear-cutting on crown land in unceded Mi’kmak’i. He has recently escalated his tactics and is now refusing food until this moratorium is put in place\, citing the plight of the critically endangered Mainland Moose.We need to support Jacob in his hunger strike and ensure that the province prioritizes addressing his concerns\, especially as the province has dragged its feet on implementing recommended forest management reforms for years. Iain Rankin has repeatedly pledged a more aggressive timeline in implementing the Lahey Report*\, which prescribed these reforms\, but current clear-cutting practices run counter to the report’s recommendations. \n\n\n\nAmong other things\, the Lahey report recommended that the DLF immediately prioritize the designation and protection of core habitat for at risk species on crown land. Despite accepting this recommendation the government has yet to implement it. Now the forests are in worse shape than they were two years ago. We can’t continue to stall and log.There could be fewer than 100 Mainland Moose left in Nova Scotia\, according to recent surveys conducted for the provincial government\, as reported by the CBC. Last year\, forest protectors were arrested for blocking access to loggers attempting to clearcut land that is known Mainland Moose habitat. A court injunction effectively removed the protectors from their blockade\, and now urgent Provincial government action is needed to protect these critical habitats. They are Canada’s unsung heroes in the fight for Black civil rights. Focusing on the 1930s to the 1950s\, this film documents the struggle of 6 people who refused to accept inequality. Featured here\, among others\, are Viola Desmond\, a woman who insisted on keeping her seat at the Roseland movie theatre in New Glasgow\, Nova Scotia in 1946 rather than moving to the section normally reserved for the city’s Black population\, and Fred Christie\, who took his case to the Supreme Court after being denied service at a Montreal tavern in 1936. SUMMARY:Politics of Hope: Countering the Roots of Anti-Black Racism: From Atlantic Canada to Canada's Complicity in the Crisis in Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Register on Eventbrite\n\n\nThis event in the Politics of Hope series is co-sponsored by the Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network\, Black Lives Matter\, Fredericton\, the Global Social Justice Project and Unama’ki College\, Cape Breton University. \n\n\n\nOver the past year Covid 19 has more clearly exposed injustices and inequalities that have long existed\, and the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by police in the US sparked the expansion of the Black Lives Matter movement. Protests spread around the world\, including in Wabanakik/Atlantic Canada\, where two indigenous people\, Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi were shot and killed by police in June 2020 in separate incidents. Exposing the links between these events\, the ensuing uprisings and long standing and ongoing colonial foreign policy towards Haiti\, guest speakers Georges Gabrielle PAUL\, Jafrikayiti and El Jones will discuss how systemic anti-Black racism affects policies in Atlantic Canada\, and Canadian foreign policy towards Haiti\, and how these policies have impacted people’s lives both historically and in contemporary times. \n\n\n\nFurther Reading:\n\n\n\nIn Haiti protests continue against corruption and repression by the government of Jovenal Moïse\, who has been ruling by decree since January 2020. \n\n\n\nThe state of affairs in Haiti today has a lot to do with a history of colonization\, exploitation and Haitian people’s continued attempts to control their own destiny. In 1804\, after a sustained and ultimately successful rebellion against slavery in France’s most profitable plantation colony of St. Domingue\, independence was declared. The new country was named Haiti after the indigenous name for the island\, Ayti. The first Constitution abolished slavery permanently. Powerful\, slave holding nations wouldn’t recognize Haiti and placed trade embargoes on it. In 1825\, while the whole French Atlantic navy waited offshore\, Haiti agreed to pay 150 million francs to France in compensation for loss of property. The formerly enslaved Haitians who had freed themselves were still seen as property by France\, so Haiti was forced to pay for its own citizens. \n\n\n\nIn 2004 Haiti celebrated the 200th anniversary of its independence. Leading up to these celebrations\, the extremely popular democratically elected President\, Jean Bertrand Aristide\, demanded that France pay back US$ 21 billion\, the then equivalent value of the indemnity that was paid to France plus 5% annual interest. The United States\, France and Canada had been preparing for this anniversary year too. On February 29th\, 2004 Canada assisted the United States and France to overthrow the government of President Jean Bertrand Aristide and Fanmi Lavalas. This coup and continued interference in the governance of Haiti has created so much tragedy in Haiti and is proof of the shallowness of any assertions by France\, the United States or Canada that they are nations that defend human rights. \n\n\n\nRecently a letter published in Canadian Dimension and Le Devoir and signed by David Suzuki\, Naomi Klein\, El Jones\, Stephen Lewis and over 500 others was sent to the Canadian government demanding it “stop propping up a repressive and corrupt dictatorship in Haiti.” We hope to amplify that message with this event and create a space for dialogue about anti-Black racism and related issues\, and encourage stronger activism.

Recognized as one of Canada’s top voices in accessibility and disability issues\, Lorin’s approach is grounded in evidence-based research and a desire to challenge communities and organizations to be more inclusive. Through education and as an in-demand speaker\, Lorin continually strives to ensure those who are misinformed or unconscious of cross-disability accessibility barriers are equipped with the tools to create inclusive communities for all. In May 2020\, she was featured in a Canadian Press article that was picked up nation-wide discussing the challenges of living with hearing loss during COVID-19. Lorin was nominated for the 2020 Canadian Lawyer Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in the Human Rights category. The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity will be hosting a virtual history conference for youth to learn about their local and provincial history. There will be a short workshop section hosted by the CCGSD with virtual take-home resources. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax. In 2016\, El was a recipient of the Burnley “Rocky” Jones human rights award for her community work and work in prison justice. She is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour\, a live radio show with incarcerated people on CKDU that creates space for people inside to share their creative work and discuss contemporary social and political issues. El was appointed the Nancy’s Chair of Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University for the 2017-2019 term. She is a winner of two Atlantic Journalism gold awards in 2018 and 2019.
