DESCRIPTION:The Liberal government has launched a review of Canada Post. On September 13\, the appointed Task Force released their “discussion paper”\, which was written with no public consultation\, little dialogue with CUPW but LOTS of conversation with CPC management\, resulting in them taking CPC’s financial projections at face value. The conclusions in the discussion paper reinforces every bit of propaganda that Canada Post and right-wing groups have been trying to perpetuate since 2011. \nFrom September 26 to October 7\, public consultations will be conducted by the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates. CUPW has learned that each meeting will only be 3 hours and speakers will be limited to 5 minutes to address the Committee. \nTo ensure that the Liberal government knows we expect them to take this process seriously and conduct it fairly\, CUPW Nova Local plans to hold an information picket outside of the consultation at the Delta Halifax at 1990 Barrington Street in Halifax on October 4 with our members and our allies

Unfortunately\, Premiere McNeil will not be there\, so we will be sending a press release and a show of quiet resistance against NS failures to act honourable to the Mikkmaq and our resistance to Alton gas. \nHowever\, it is quiet resistance due to the awards ceremony for Mikmaq elder and youth. \nEach Mikmaq and Ally can decide to attend inside or outside the house. \nThere will be a peaceful and artistic presence of the Treaty Truckhouse resistance at Province House.\nSo\, let us all get creative in what that show of resistance will be.

Join us for a potluck feast.\n(There is no funding for the feast\, but we have always had plenty of food at the Truckhouse.) Food and drink donations will be welcomed. We will be fishing\, teepee painting\, sharing stories and songs. \nBoat trips to Treaty Island after hightide from 2 to 5 ish.  \nStart time: 1 pm and you are welcome to stay over for the weekend. After she served her time it was discovered she is not a Canadian citizen – she was taken into care at age 11 after coming to Canada at age 8 and suffering sexual assault in her family. She believed that she had citizenship. \nNow they are trying to deport her despite her being a one time\, non violent offender who had been victimized her whole life\, failed by the system\, and serving her time. \nWhile they are conducting hearings she is currently chained to her bed in hospital. This should be an outage in Canada. We need to call on our government to intervene in this case and end the torture of this woman. \nI want to call a rally outside Dartmouth General to draw attention to her conditions and to call on the government to cease deportation proceedings and intervene in her shackling. This is URGENT as every day she is in shackles is too long. \nIf we call a rally for Thursday at 6PM outside Dartmouth General would people be able to attend? We need numbers to make this an issue media and government are forced to pay attention to. \nAnyone who cares about human rights should object to the shackling of a sick woman who is no risk and has served her time. If we call a rally will people stand in solidarity? This is an urgent justice issue.”

DESCRIPTION:The Indigenous Speakers Series presents\n“Our Ancestors are in Our Land\, Water\, and Air: a ‘Two-Eyed Seeing’ Approach to Researching Environmental Health Concerns with Pictou Landing First Nation”\nwith Kim Strickland\, Sheila Francis\, Lexy Francis\, and Diana Lewis \nResponding to the longstanding pollution of Boat Harbour\, and the environmental health concerns and social tensions around it\, the Pictou Landing Native Women¹s Association has mobilized community-based research and capacity-building to determine: “Are we getting sick from Boat Harbour?” \nSpeaker info:\nKim Strickland is a lifelong resident of the Pictou Landing First Nation\, and Community Research Associate in the Health\, Environment\, and Communities Research Lab. \nSheila Francis is the former President of the Pictou Landing Native Women’s Association and facilitated the emerging partnership between PLNWA and the research team. \nLexie Strickland is from Pictou Landing First Nation and 16 years old. She has been working with her mom\, Kim\, with an interest in the environmental monitoring aspects of this project for 3 years. After high school\, she plans to continue her education in environmental science. \nDiana Lewis hails from the Indian Brook First Nation and has worked for Aboriginal organizations in Ontario and NS\, the federal and provincial governments\, and the private and non-profit sectors. She is a PhD candidate & faculty in Sociology & Anthropology\, and Coordinator for the new Indigenous Minor Program at Dalhousie University.

Join NSCAD University in welcoming Alan Syliboy to Paul O’Regan Hall and hear how he addresses the Mi’kmaq’s rich culture and traditions in his practice. Syliboy’s exhibitions “The Thundermaker” opens at the Anna Leonowens Gallery on October 11th at 5:30pm. \nBio: Alan Syliboy was born and raised in Truro and lives in the Millbrook First Nations community. Among many achievements\, in 2007 Alan took part in creating illustrations for the novel The Stone Canoe: Two LostMi’kmaq Tales\, which inspired him to continue his use of the Little Thunder character throughout his works\, even co-writing a song for his band Lonecloud\, called Little Thunder.\nIn 2009 Alan collaborated with Nance Ackerman and Paton Francis to create the animation\, Little Thunder for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics using Alan’s interesting and beautiful style. The animation showcased the true magnificence of his artwork and solidified its incredible potential. \nAlan has looked to the indigenous Mi’kmaq petroglyph tradition (rock drawings) for inspiration and developed his own artistic vocabulary out of those forms. They are both beautiful and inspirational and speak of a rich culture and tradition. He is currently working on a graphic novel which features Little Thunder.

The event will be attended by writer and executive producer Silver DonaldCameron\, and also by director and producer Chris Beckett. A question and answer session will follow thescreening. Admission is by donation. \n“It’s a fabulous film\,” said Sierra’s Gretchen Fitzgerald. “Silver Donald and Chris have been working on it for four solid years\, travelling all over the world to collect stories about the remarkable impact of environmental rights on the lives of people in the countries where those rights are recognized. Which is most countries. But not Canada or the United States.” \nUniversity-sponsored screenings in Nova Scotia will also take place at Acadia University in Wolfville\, NS\, at 7:00 on September 19\, in 244 Beveridge Hall\, and at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish\, NS\, at 7:00 on September 28 in the Schwartz Auditorium. These screenings are both open to the public. \nThe official national premiere of Green Rights will take place in Ottawa on October 4. The Hon.
