SUMMARY:Justice For Fliss Cramman
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: The location will be in the parking lot outside the courthouse facing the Dartmouth General to ensure we do not impede anyone using the hospital or disrupt patients and their families. \nhttp://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/ontario-woman-deportation-hearing-halifax-fliss-cramman-uk-1.3775722 \n“URGENT! URGENT! Please read and respond \nFliss Cramman is desperately ill and shackled to her bed in Dartmouth General hospital. She was imprisoned for offering to sell drugs. After she served her time it was discovered she is not a Canadian citizen – she was taken into care at age 11 after coming to Canada at age 8 and suffering sexual assault in her family. She believed that she had citizenship. \nNow they are trying to deport her despite her being a one time\, non violent offender who had been victimized her whole life\, failed by the system\, and serving her time. \nWhile they are conducting hearings she is currently chained to her bed in hospital. This should be an outage in Canada. We need to call on our government to intervene in this case and end the torture of this woman. \nI want to call a rally outside Dartmouth General to draw attention to her conditions and to call on the government to cease deportation proceedings and intervene in her shackling. This is URGENT as every day she is in shackles is too long. \nIf we call a rally for Thursday at 6PM outside Dartmouth General would people be able to attend? We need numbers to make this an issue media and government are forced to pay attention to. \nAnyone who cares about human rights should object to the shackling of a sick woman who is no risk and has served her time. If we call a rally will people stand in solidarity? This is an urgent justice issue.”

SUMMARY:Alan Syliboy: Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:NSCAD University Public Lecture Series presents Alan Syliboy \nFor First Nations artist\, activist and musician Alan Syliboy\, stories are the threads that tie the Mi’kmaq people together\, making them aware of their identity and place in the world. Join NSCAD University in welcoming Alan Syliboy to Paul O’Regan Hall and hear how he addresses the Mi’kmaq’s rich culture and traditions in his practice. Syliboy’s exhibitions “The Thundermaker” opens at the Anna Leonowens Gallery on October 11th at 5:30pm. \nBio: Alan Syliboy was born and raised in Truro and lives in the Millbrook First Nations community. Among many achievements\, in 2007 Alan took part in creating illustrations for the novel The Stone Canoe: Two LostMi’kmaq Tales\, which inspired him to continue his use of the Little Thunder character throughout his works\, even co-writing a song for his band Lonecloud\, called Little Thunder.\nIn 2009 Alan collaborated with Nance Ackerman and Paton Francis to create the animation\, Little Thunder for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics using Alan’s interesting and beautiful style. The animation showcased the true magnificence of his artwork and solidified its incredible potential. \nAlan has looked to the indigenous Mi’kmaq petroglyph tradition (rock drawings) for inspiration and developed his own artistic vocabulary out of those forms. They are both beautiful and inspirational and speak of a rich culture and tradition. He is currently working on a graphic novel which features Little Thunder.

The truth is\, many municipal issues are related to/affected by poverty. \nWhat issues? School Boards\,Gentrification. Rooming House Standards. Food Security\, Transit Service. Parks and Recreation. Public Libraries. Water Rates. And much more. \nCome and hear a panel of low-income individuals talk about thenissues important to them. As well as some things that happen when HRM Council\, often acting in good faith\, does things negatively affecting folks living in poverty. \nThis Press Conference is being organized by the Community Advocates Network\, a group that unites people living on low-income and their allies in the fight to end poverty. \nFriday September 23 rd at 11 am \nJBO Centre\, 2103 Gottingen Street\, Halifax \nThere will be opportunities to speak with panelists individually. \nFor more info\, contact: Amy Moonshadow 902-492-2366 \nAnn Duffy 902-454- 9760 \nWayne MacNaughton 902-431- 3399

SUMMARY:Statues and Silence
DESCRIPTION:How are Canadian communities addressing the tension between commemorating the settler history of Canada and\nrecognizing the harms that colonialism have visited upon Indigenous peoples? \nPicking up on a recent failure of the Halifax Regional Municipality to support engagement around calls to remove the\nstatue of Edward Cornwallis\, the colonial authority that introduced genocidal policies that encouraged scalping\nMi’kmaq men\, women and children\, Prismatic hosts a community discussion on efforts to reconcile through a critical\nanalysis of local histories. \nHosted by Kaitlin Verge\, B. Ed.\, this discussion will provide an opportunity to examine how different communities are\naddressing historical realities and giving voice to communities that have been silenced.

SUMMARY:The Daily News: What's Right? What's Wrong? What's Happening?
DESCRIPTION:The Daily News:\nWhat’s Right? What’s Wrong? What’s Happening? \nThe media landscape is rapidly changing with unprecedented cuts to newsrooms and the growth of digital platforms. How does that impact journalistic capability and accountability and the access to reporting and information necessary for a well-functioning democracy? Changes in the ways we receive civic information influence our ability to maintain an informed citizenry for both good and bad. What is the role of media\, government and the public in safeguarding Canadians’ fundamental right to credible information on which they depend as citizens? \nEdward Greenspon\, President & CEO Public Policy Forum

SUMMARY:NFB Showcase: We Can't Make the Same Mistake Twice
DESCRIPTION:In 2007\, the Child and Family Caring Society of Canada and the Assembly of First Nations filed a landmark discrimination complaint against Indian Affairs and Northern Development Canada. We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice documents this epic court challenge\, giving voice to the tenacious childcare workers at its epicentre; especially Caring Society executive director Cindy Blackstock\, who was spied on and harassed by the federal government for her part in this saga. Celebrated documentarian Alanis Obomsawin (Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance) takes us through all the stages of this long legal battle without ever losing sight of the well-being of children and the sustainability of Indigenous culture. \nDirector: Alanis Obomsawin\nWriter: Alanis Obomsawin\n

SUMMARY:Beyond a Basic Income: the Radical Imagination and the Commons
DESCRIPTION:With Max Haiven. \nWe are launching Venture Commons with back-to-back workshops with Dario Azzelini (Sept 17th) and Max Haiven (Sept 18th) at Just Us Coffee house. \nVenture Commons is an experimental learning community centered around kick-starting collectives\, commons and co-ops to create a REAL sharing economy. Balancing theory and practice\, we aim to grow our thinking\, skills and capacities to create initiatives that support rather than exploit our communities. venturecommons.ca \nIn the past few years\, the idea that all people should be entitled to a basic guaranteed income has travelled from the fringes to the centre of political debate and enjoys support from across the ideological spectrum. But what sort of basic income do we want\, and what would it take to get us there? Are there forms of basic income that might be a step backwards for social and ecological justice? And how might a basic income intersect with struggles for gender justice\, decolonization\, anti-racism and ecological care? Is there a horizon for us beyond a basic income? And what part might a basic income have in more ambitious struggles for a different world? \nMax Haiven is a writer\, teacher and organizer\, and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Art History and Critical Studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in K’jipuktuk in Mi’kma’ki (Halifax\, Canada). His research focuses on themes including the financialization of society and culture\, social movements and the radical imagination\, the politics and economics of culture\, critical art practices\, and social and cultural theory. He writes articles for both academic and general audiences and has been published in venues including Truth-Out\, Dissident Voice\, Social Text\, Cultural Studies\, Cultural Politics and Interface: A Journal For and About Social Movements . He is author of the books Crises of Imagination\, Crises of Power: Capitalism\, Creativity and the Commons (Zed Books\, 2014)\, The Radical Imagination: Social Movement Research in the Age of Austerity (with Alex Khasnabish\, Zed Books\, 2014) and Cultures of Financialization: Fictitious Capital in Popular Culture and Everyday Life (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2014). \nCo-presented with the Radical Imagination project
