Balancing theory and practice\, we aim to grow our thinking\, skills and capacities to create initiatives that support rather than exploit our communities. venturecommons.ca \nIn the past few years\, the idea that all people should be entitled to a basic guaranteed income has travelled from the fringes to the centre of political debate and enjoys support from across the ideological spectrum. But what sort of basic income do we want\, and what would it take to get us there? Are there forms of basic income that might be a step backwards for social and ecological justice? And how might a basic income intersect with struggles for gender justice\, decolonization\, anti-racism and ecological care? Is there a horizon for us beyond a basic income? And what part might a basic income have in more ambitious struggles for a different world? \nMax Haiven is a writer\, teacher and organizer\, and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Art History and Critical Studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in K’jipuktuk in Mi’kma’ki (Halifax\, Canada). His research focuses on themes including the financialization of society and culture\, social movements and the radical imagination\, the politics and economics of culture\, critical art practices\, and social and cultural theory. He writes articles for both academic and general audiences and has been published in venues including Truth-Out\, Dissident Voice\, Social Text\, Cultural Studies\, Cultural Politics and Interface: A Journal For and About Social Movements . He is author of the books Crises of Imagination\, Crises of Power: Capitalism\, Creativity and the Commons (Zed Books\, 2014)\, The Radical Imagination: Social Movement Research in the Age of Austerity (with Alex Khasnabish\, Zed Books\, 2014) and Cultures of Financialization: Fictitious Capital in Popular Culture and Everyday Life (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2014). \nCo-presented with the Radical Imagination project

DESCRIPTION:We are callling on all available and interested Allies and Lnu to join us in our efforts to protect the Shubenacadie River\, our sacred ceremonial flags were removed from the river site\, our elder was threatened to be arrested as he attempted to put them back up. Our women were turned away from conducting ceremony and today Alton sends a letter saying it is concerned about our safety in their industrial zone. \nWe are worried about the safety of the water and species that rely on the Shubenacadie River. There are endangered species and critical habitat that Canada and Alton are set on destroying. \nThere are currently no environmental protections or legal recourse in Canada or Nova Scotia to prove needed protections. \nWe will be having a gathering at 106 highway 224\, overlooking the SHubie river\, Will need signs and flags\, man power and prayers for the water\, women water warriors\, allies.

Fishing takes a lot of time – you should get comfortable! Musical instruments welcome. Make yourself at home on our river bank. \nAll of us have the right to travel on the “banks of the watercourse” through the Angling Act. Even though the land is now leased to Alton Gas\, the public is still allowed access to the banks for the purposes of fishing. \nTo get to the river bank\, take the 102 to the Stewiacke exit (exit 11\, with the mastodon statue). Head east off the highway towards highway 2. Turn left on highway 2. Turn left on Riverside Road/Fort Ellis Road. Stay right when the road splits\, and look for the Mi’kmaq flags. The layoffs are the result of $6.7 million in budget cuts to long-term care announced by the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.\nMore staffing reductions are anticipated at other nursing homes in Nova Scotia. CUPE long-term care workers across the province will continue to campaign to stop the cuts. \nCUPE members\, and anyone with a loved one residing in a nursing home\, are also encouraged to contact their MLA and ask them to oppose these cuts to long-term care.
