SUMMARY:Candlelight vigil for Iraq
DESCRIPTION:A Candlelight Vigil is being organized for Tuesday night to commemorate\, respect and honor the victims of the violent and obscene tragedies that took place in Baghdad\, Iraq on Sunday.\nPlease join for a peaceful\, silent vigil to mourn the senseless violence and loss of life Iraq and to stand together to show support as global citizens\, united under our shared values of Humanity \nWe will gather at the corner of Spring Garden Rd and South Park St in silence.\nThis is a family-friendly event\, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.\nThis is NOT a political nor is it a religious event\, rather it is an opportunity to gather and unite individuals\, families\, and all of our international residents in Halifax.\nThis is a chance to take a stand\, to say “NO” to violence and fear.\nIt is an opportunity for the greater community to stand together in solidarity for the purpose of peace and justice and to demonstrate human and spiritual respect. \nA week ago a suicide truck bomb ripped through Baghdad\, families are still hoping that rescuers searching through the rubble can locate the bodies of their loved ones.\nThe Saturday night attack on a busy shopping district was the deadliest single incident in the Iraq’s war-weary capital in years\, killing more than 300 people.\nCrews are still on the scene in the Karrada neighbourhood where the blast occurred\, trying to pull bodies from the devastation.\nAnd 81 of the bodies are so charred\, DNA testing will need to be conducted in order to identify them.\nOne couple at the scene was searching for their teenage son who’d gone to a cafe with his friends to celebrate his birthday.\nAnother man was looking for five of his relatives\, including children\, who were buying new clothes for Eid-al-Fitr – the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan.\nISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. It was the latest in a string of assaults during the holy month for Muslims\, a period of fasting and prayer\, and also a time when jihadists launch operations against those they regard as their enemies.

SUMMARY:Pride and Capitalism: Resisting Commodification and Acknowledging Settler Privilege
DESCRIPTION:Our Resilient Bodies presents an intro to contemporary problems faced by mainstream Pride movements. How did Pride come to be seen as a big party for wealthy White cis gay men\, while failing to serve the needs of those who experience the majority of homophobic and transphobic violence? What other kinds of problems are associated with the large influence of corporations in promoting and funding Pride? \nThis workshop will explore the connections between corporate investors\, the theft of Indigenous land\, and the exclusion/marginilization of queer people of colour\, trans people and nonbinary queer people from Pride. Capitalism is an economic system very often critiqued abstractly but rarely broken down. \nIn this workshop\, we will deconstruct capitalism’s defining features in order to understand how this economic s ystem works and how it privileges settlers at the expense of many marginilized communities. We will analyse our own positions as settlers and discuss how we can work through this position to resist capitalist violence. \n—ACCESSIBILITY INFO— \nThere is a ramp leading up to the side of the building. (The pavement bump was fixed\, but a new wooden bump has taken it’s place). No automatic door. \nBathrooms are wheelchair accessible\, single stall\, and gender neutral. \nWe’ll be meeting on the first floor. \n—FACILITATOR BIOS— \nCharly Kelly is an American Sign Language-English Interpreting student who is trans\, queer\, and ace. They grew up in New Brunswick\, which is unceded M’ikmaq territory. They were the chairperson of the Fredericton Gender Minorities Group from 2014-2015\, where they presented many Trans 101 lectures and worked to provide a safe space for many rans people in Fredericton. In 2014\, they were the keynote speaker at the Pride in Education Conference held in Fredericton. They are excited to get back to activism and workshopping after a year of school. \nOlive Bestvater is a political theory student and hetero cis-gendered settler from Treaty 6 territory Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan. She has been involved in SK’s activist community in varying capacities for five odd years. Projects that she’s been inovlved with include an unsuccessful campaign for a Saskatoon PIRG\, co-presidenting the Socialist Students Association\, and helpng with the International Women’s Movement’s annual photography showcase which challenges media representations of women of colour. Olive has been involved with a handful of workshops on capitalism taking place all over so-called Canada. Her minor in Critical Perspectives on Social Justice and the Common Good has focused extensively on the colonial impacts of global capitalism. Everything Olive knows about Indigenous resistances and realities is a result of the influence of a strong community of radical Indigenous students in Saskatchewan actively challenging capitalist dominance across the world.

SUMMARY:ACORN Nova Scotia and North End Residents to March on Condo Developer Demanding Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:North End residents and members of the antipoverty organization ACORN Nova Scotia are planning a demonstration against gentrification in North End Halifax. \nThe North End has been rapidly gentrified in recent years: affordable housing has been demolished and sold off\, rents have risen\, and an influx luxury condominiums and high-end businesses hasve displaced many longtime residents. \n“It’s a takeover. It’s obvious\, and it’s outrageous” Said Darryl King\, the CoChair of the NorthCentral Halifax chapter of ACORN “You never see these developers building housing that the people here can afford. There’s less and less all the time. But they’re building these $300\,000 condos. They have no concern for the neighbourhood they work in\, or the people who are being pushed out.” \nACORN members and allies will march on a local developer to demand the conversion of unsold condominium units into affordable housing. “Our message is simple: if you want to come into our neighbourhood and build\, you’ve got to build something for the people who live here.” said Bonnie Barrett\, the Chair of Halifax ACORN “We won’t allow our community to be erased. We won’t disapear quietly into the night. We’re standing up andfighting back.” \nTime:12:30-2 pm \nDate: July 9th \nLocation: Meet at North Branch Library 2285 Gottingen \nNova Scotia ACORN is an affiliate of ACORN Canada\, a national antipoverty organization with over 70\,000 low and moderate income members organized into 20 neighborhood chapters in 7 cities across Canada. SUMMARY:Monthly reading group: Truth and Reconciliation Commission report
DESCRIPTION:Ecology Action Centre joins reconciliation pledge and challenges public to do the same \nK’JIPUKTUK (HALIFAX) – June 21st\, 2016 \nNova Scotia’s largest environmental organization is challenging its staff\, board\, and membership to read the full summary report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) this year. \nThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) was organized by the parties to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.  The final report of this commission details the horrific history and legacy of Canadian residential schools\, which involved 150\,000 First Nations\, Inuit and Mètis children over more than a century. As the TRC notes in the 360-odd page summary report\, Canada needs to move from “apology to action” if reconciliation with Aboriginal Peoples is to succeed. The TRC includes 94 recommendations for change in policies\, programs and the “way we talk to\, and about\, each other.” \nEAC is inviting interested people to join them in exploring the report through a monthly reading group\, which will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30pm\, starting on July 6th. \n“Reading this report is a key step towards understanding what the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action mean for us\, both as an organization and in our own lives\,” explains co-organizer Sadie Beaton\, who also works as EAC’s Community Conservation Research Network Coordinator. \nAs reading group co-organizer Joanna Bull describes\, “We are committing to this in order to hear the report directly and sincerely\, to educate ourselves and increase our understanding of the impacts and legacy of residential schools in Canada.” \nEAC’s commitment and challenge is part of a national pledge being organized by http://trcreadingchallenge.com/. Over 3000 people have signed up across Canada to read this crucial document\, starting on June 21st\, National Aboriginal Day. “Reconciliation is going to take hard work. People of all walks of life and at all levels of society will need to be willingly engaged\,” notes the Commission in the closing of the report. \n  \nYou can find the PDF version of the Summary Report here: http://www.trc.ca/websites/trcinstitution/File/2015/Findings/Exec_Summary_2015_05_31_web_o.pdf. \nFor further information\, please contact: \n  \n  \nJoanna Bull \nVolunteer & Events Coordinator \n902-454-5226 \ncommunications@ecologyaction.ca \n  \nSadie Beaton \nCommunity Conservation Research Coordinator\n902-221-1953 \nSadie@ecologyaction.ca \n

SUMMARY:MetCap Living Tenants Demand Landlord Licensing
DESCRIPTION:Halifax\, N.S. – Tenants renting in private housing managed by the MetCap Living Inc. have been living in slum conditions with bedbugs\, mice\, mold\, and more. \n“When I first moved in\, there were used needles stuck in the carpet\,” says Katarina Jordan-Baynell\, a MetCap tenant and member of the Dartmouth ACORN chapter. “With a young child\, these oversights and lack of repairs are very concerning.” Jordan-Baynell says that a request to repair her kitchen sink took months to fulfill\, and the repairperson was disrespectful when he finally did arrive. \n“MetCap can take one\, three\, or even six months to address issues within their buildings\,” says Jonethan Brigley\, a MetCap tenant and Chair of the Dartmouth ACORN chapter. “Meanwhile\, tenants are responsible for paying their rent on time every month or else they risk being evicted.” Brigley says with a proactive landlord licensing system\, landlords will be held accountable to maintain their buildings. \nOn Tuesday\, July 5th at 2pm tenants from Spryfield\, Dartmouth\, and Halifax will be coming together to protest the poor living conditions. They will be demonstrating out front of a MetCap Living management office on 32 Primrose Street in Dartmouth. \nWhat: Picket \nTime: 2:15pm \nDate: Tuesday\, July 5\, 2016 \nWhere: MetCap Living Inc. office –32 Primrose Street\, Halifax. \nWho: ACORN Nova Scotia \n### \nFor more information contact: \nSam Krawec – Organizer\, Nova Scotia ACORN \nhalifax@acorncanada.org \n(902) 221 5416 \nWhat is ACORN Nova Scotia? \nAssociation of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) Nova Scotia is the local office of ACORN Canada – a national independent organization of low and moderate income families. SUMMARY:All art is political: a workshop lecture with Sebastien Labelle & Prof. Shannon Brownlee
DESCRIPTION:“All art is political in the sense that it serves someone’s politics.” – August Wilson \nHow do we determine the ‘politics’ of art? Who is served and who is left out? The study of ideology allows us to answer these questions and critically examine the role of art in shaping\, bolstering or subverting social norms and conventions. Culture both weaves and reflects the understanding we have of the world around us\, and what we say or (more importantly) don’t say tells us a lot about how we believe our world is or should be. By looking at examples from popular culture we can determine what some of those norms and beliefs might be… and who they serve. \nNOTE: The bar will be open on this evening. \nFacilitators: \nSébastien Labelle is an actor\, trade unionist\, community organizer and the Executive Director of the Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative. He is also the Festival Director of the Mayworks Halifax Festival\, an annual arts festival celebrating workers and struggles for justice. Sébastien is a former apprentice of the Bread & Puppet Theatre in Vermont and is currently helping in the development of the River Clyde Pageant in PEI using traditional forms of street theatre. \nProf. Shannon Brownlee teaches film studies in the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University. Her research interests include film theory\, film adaptation\, experimental film\, animated film\, and feminist and queer cinemas and theories. \nREGISTRATION: \nRegistration is free to coop members\, and $5 for the general public. \nPlease register by filling out the form available HERE

SUMMARY:Wolfville: Risks of Energy East Information Session and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Energy East Information Tour:\nThe Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is hosting a series of information sessions in coastal Nova Scotian communities along the Bay of Fundy to discuss risks of the proposed Energy East pipeline to the Bay of Fundy. \nThe EAC’s information sessions\, (dates and locations listed below) are a chance to discuss details and risks of Energy East\, and hear feedback and concerns from coastal communities in Nova Scotia about the project. \nTransCanada’s Energy East pipeline and associated export terminal in Saint John\, New Brunswick pose risks to the entire Bay of Fundy due to associated marine terminal and increased tanker traffic in the Bay of Fundy\, through the Gulf of Maine. Tanker traffic would increase by nearly 330 million barrels\, or 290 tankers per year. This would impact coastal communities\, fisheries\, and much of Nova Scotia’s mainland coastline\, especially the Bay of Fundy. \nVisit www.savefundy.ca for more information on the risks of the Energy East pipeline\, and details regarding the upcoming tour. \nAll are welcome.
