This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.” \n\n\n\nChris George is a Ph.D student in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. DESCRIPTION:Today\, Saturday\, June 26 at 5pm\, an Emergency Rally for Palestine is being held. At Halifax’s Grand Parade Square\, Free Palestine Halifax and activists will be calling on the media in Halifax to commit to fair coverage of Palestine and the federal government of Canada to stop selling weapons that are being used to harm and kill Palestinian civilians. We call for the right to self determination\, and the right to sovereign rights in a supposed democratic state. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will feature speakers from the Indigenous\, Atlantic Palestinian\, and Black communities; discussing the connections and intersections of the fight for human rights.  \n\n\n\n Elder Billy and Joan Smith will be leading the welcoming ceremony. Their generous support for Palestine reinforces the need for respect and acknowledgement that this rally takes place on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Mi’kmaq peoples. \n\n\n\nAyman Awad\, an outspoken advocate for queer Arab rights\, will represent Free Palestine Halifax. \n\n\n\nDana Elborno\, a young Palestinian activist\, will be representing Atlantic Canada’s Palestinian Society. \n\n\n\nLarry Haiven\, an academic and Palestinian rights activist\, will be representing Independent Jewish Voices. \n\n\n\nEl Jones\, poet laureate and community activist\, will be representing herself. \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 restrictions are limiting the initial rally to 75 people\, and Free Palestine Halifax will be collecting the names of the first 75 attendees. This information will not be provided to authorities\, but is being collected according to COVID protocol.  \n\n\n\nMasks and social distancing will be in place\, as well as additional requirements of phase 2 reopening under Nova Scotia’s Health Authority.

DESCRIPTION:Virtual forum\, the 8th episode in our Speak Truth to Power Series: They found us & we are coming home – The truth about residential schools \n\n\n\nThe announcement last month that the remains of 215 Indigenous children had been found on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School and now with the more recent finding of 104 potential graves at the Brandon Residential School\, has left the Indigenous community\, the nation\, and the world in grief but also with a renewed sense of urgency. Nova Scotia’s Sipekne’katik First Nation says it will immediately begin an investigation of the former Shubenacadie Indian Residential school site grounds. Hundreds of young children were taken from their families and communities and forced to attend Canada’s notorious residential schools like Kamloops and assimilate into Western culture. For years\, many survivors\, and relatives of survivors have been talking about the horrible and dehumanizing experiences\, including medical experimentations\, malnourishment\, harsh punishment\, and brutality including deaths and unmarked graves of children who were just trying to be themselves…some ask if this is genocide? This forum allows us to listen to the voices of the Indigenous community\, to understand\, show compassion\, and mobilize to act. DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join the discussion: How can we ensure that everyone gets the care they need\, and make sure we are also caring for the people who provide it? We are building a coalition to advocate for a universal\, comprehensive\, publicly funded\, high quality\, affordable\, accessible\, accountable\, and non-profit childcare system in Nova Scotia. Are you a parent? A grandparent? Are you a child care provider? An early childhood educator? A concerned community member? We want to hear from you at this event. \n\n\n\nHear from panelists about why you should care about the care economy\, which is about people who need care and those who provide care\, paid and unpaid. Much of this care work is undervalued\, most of it done by women\, and disproportionately immigrants\, migrant workers\, and racialized people. Care is also critical social infrastructure. Hear how child care itself is an economic driver and why it is critical to create a healthy society\, ensuring everyone reaches their potential. \n\n\n\nOur speakers: \n\n\n\nAngella MacEwen is a Senior Economist at CUPE National\, and a policy fellow with the Broadbent Institute. Her primary focus is understanding the impacts of Canadian social and economic policy on workers. Angella writes a quarterly publication\, Economy at Work\, which aims to communicate current economic issues to a broad audience. She holds a MA in Economics from Dalhousie University. \n\n\n\nEl Jones is a two-time National Spoken Word Champion and the former Poet Laureate of Halifax. She is dedicated to using poetry in prison outreach and youth engagement\, and volunteers twice a week at Centreline Studio on the corner of Uniacke and Gottingen. Her poems deal with the social-political issues that surround race and gender. For the past year\, Jones has been running the Saturday Morning edition of the Halifax Examiner\, bringing her razor-sharp analysis to bear on Nova Scotian politics. We’re seeing an exponential increase in people forced onto the street. Meanwhile\, average residents of HRM who remain housed find their rent soaring to unsustainable levels. This cannot continue. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, politicians refuse to help in a meaningful way. Not only do some politicians pass the buck on positive action\, they also use their power to attack the band-aid solutions to the crisis that groups like Halifax Mutual Aid (HMA) offer. \n\n\n\nHRM has been maneuvering to destroy volunteer-built crisis shelters\, which continue to be a lifeline for people experiencing houselessness. As HMA’s waitlist for shelters grows (along with people forced onto the street)\, HRM attacks the homeless instead of the housing crisis. \n\n\n\nWe ask you to lend your voice to the chorus of caring and concerned residents of HRM to tell the city government this: \n\n\n\n“Stay out of the way if you can’t lend a hand.” \n\n\n\nPlease join us Sunday June 20th\, 2pm at the Old Central Library in Downtown Halifax.

Jails\, prisons\, and penitentiaries have not been immune to this trend with an infection rate amongst incarcerated people and institutional staff several times that of the general population.  \n\n\n\nAs the pandemic continues with more transmissible and virulent variants spreading across the country\, this webinar draws on the insights of currently and formerly incarcerated people\, their loved ones\, and abolitionist organizers engaged in prisoner solidarity and mutual aid work to explore multiple facets of the on-going prison pandemic.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers will examine (a) the uneven use of diversion and decarceration measures that have unnecessarily exposed those behind bars to a greater risk of COVID-19 infections\, (b) the suppression of rights\, privileges and protections for prisoners alongside the ramping-up of torturous conditions of confinement in the name of public health\, and (c) the often politicized\, coercive and often ineffective roll-out of vaccinations in carceral settings. It follows several communities as they fight back against big industry’s quest to offload toxic waste\, build more pipelines\, and develop the land at any cost—even if it means contaminating rivers and destroying ecosystems. The title\, Invisible Hand\, refers to the invisible hand of capitalism.  \n\n\n\nExecutive producer Mark Ruffalo explains\, “This [Rights of Nature] movement changes everything. It honors Indigenous wisdom and shifts our priorities. It restores balance by placing nature at the center of our decision-making processes and gives the power that corporations stole back to our communities.” \n\n\n\nThe free screening is available for 24 hours\, beginning Monday\, June 14 at 7:30pm AT.
