SUMMARY:Emergency rally for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Today\, Saturday\, June 26 at 5pm\, an Emergency Rally for Palestine is being held. At Halifax’s Grand Parade Square\, Free Palestine Halifax and activists will be calling on the media in Halifax to commit to fair coverage of Palestine and the federal government of Canada to stop selling weapons that are being used to harm and kill Palestinian civilians. We call for the right to self determination\, and the right to sovereign rights in a supposed democratic state. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will feature speakers from the Indigenous\, Atlantic Palestinian\, and Black communities; discussing the connections and intersections of the fight for human rights.  \n\n\n\n Elder Billy and Joan Smith will be leading the welcoming ceremony. Their generous support for Palestine reinforces the need for respect and acknowledgement that this rally takes place on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Mi’kmaq peoples. \n\n\n\nAyman Awad\, an outspoken advocate for queer Arab rights\, will represent Free Palestine Halifax. \n\n\n\nDana Elborno\, a young Palestinian activist\, will be representing Atlantic Canada’s Palestinian Society. \n\n\n\nLarry Haiven\, an academic and Palestinian rights activist\, will be representing Independent Jewish Voices. \n\n\n\nEl Jones\, poet laureate and community activist\, will be representing herself. \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 restrictions are limiting the initial rally to 75 people\, and Free Palestine Halifax will be collecting the names of the first 75 attendees. This information will not be provided to authorities\, but is being collected according to COVID protocol.  \n\n\n\nMasks and social distancing will be in place\, as well as additional requirements of phase 2 reopening under Nova Scotia’s Health Authority.

SUMMARY:Speak Truth to Power Forum: They found us and we are coming home – The truth about residential schools
DESCRIPTION:Virtual forum\, the 8th episode in our Speak Truth to Power Series: They found us & we are coming home – The truth about residential schools \n\n\n\nThe announcement last month that the remains of 215 Indigenous children had been found on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School and now with the more recent finding of 104 potential graves at the Brandon Residential School\, has left the Indigenous community\, the nation\, and the world in grief but also with a renewed sense of urgency. Nova Scotia’s Sipekne’katik First Nation says it will immediately begin an investigation of the former Shubenacadie Indian Residential school site grounds. Hundreds of young children were taken from their families and communities and forced to attend Canada’s notorious residential schools like Kamloops and assimilate into Western culture. For years\, many survivors\, and relatives of survivors have been talking about the horrible and dehumanizing experiences\, including medical experimentations\, malnourishment\, harsh punishment\, and brutality including deaths and unmarked graves of children who were just trying to be themselves…some ask if this is genocide? This forum allows us to listen to the voices of the Indigenous community\, to understand\, show compassion\, and mobilize to act. Humanity should not be associated with one culture or identity. \n\n\n\nGuest Panelists include: \n\n\n\nPatti Doyle-Bedwell\, Associate Professor\, Dalhousie UniversityNatalie Gloade\, Indigenous ActivistThe Honourable Graydon Nicholas\, Former Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and Chancellor of St. Thomas Universityadditional speakers to be confirmed\n\n\n\nJoin via Teams Live

SUMMARY:The Caring Economy
DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join the discussion: How can we ensure that everyone gets the care they need\, and make sure we are also caring for the people who provide it? We are building a coalition to advocate for a universal\, comprehensive\, publicly funded\, high quality\, affordable\, accessible\, accountable\, and non-profit childcare system in Nova Scotia. Are you a parent? A grandparent? Are you a child care provider? An early childhood educator? A concerned community member? We want to hear from you at this event. \n\n\n\nHear from panelists about why you should care about the care economy\, which is about people who need care and those who provide care\, paid and unpaid. Much of this care work is undervalued\, most of it done by women\, and disproportionately immigrants\, migrant workers\, and racialized people. Care is also critical social infrastructure. Hear how child care itself is an economic driver and why it is critical to create a healthy society\, ensuring everyone reaches their potential. \n\n\n\nOur speakers: \n\n\n\nAngella MacEwen is a Senior Economist at CUPE National\, and a policy fellow with the Broadbent Institute. Her primary focus is understanding the impacts of Canadian social and economic policy on workers. Angella writes a quarterly publication\, Economy at Work\, which aims to communicate current economic issues to a broad audience. She holds a MA in Economics from Dalhousie University. \n\n\n\nEl Jones is a two-time National Spoken Word Champion and the former Poet Laureate of Halifax. She is dedicated to using poetry in prison outreach and youth engagement\, and volunteers twice a week at Centreline Studio on the corner of Uniacke and Gottingen. Her poems deal with the social-political issues that surround race and gender. For the past year\, Jones has been running the Saturday Morning edition of the Halifax Examiner\, bringing her razor-sharp analysis to bear on Nova Scotian politics. Her book of spoken word poetry\, Live from the Afrikan Resistance! was published by Fernwood in 2014. \n\n\n\nRegistration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqdemrpjkqEtwLZ2Fk1trloG25a5OPGWnM \n\n\n\nStay up to date with Child Care Now NS\, follow us on social media!  \n\n\n\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/322642669420137 \n\n\n\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/childcarenowns \n\n\n\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/ChildCareNowNS

SUMMARY:RALLY Against the Housing Crisis!
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/614614466597683/ \n\n\n\nThe housing crisis is spiralling out of control. We’re seeing an exponential increase in people forced onto the street. Meanwhile\, average residents of HRM who remain housed find their rent soaring to unsustainable levels. This cannot continue. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, politicians refuse to help in a meaningful way. Not only do some politicians pass the buck on positive action\, they also use their power to attack the band-aid solutions to the crisis that groups like Halifax Mutual Aid (HMA) offer. \n\n\n\nHRM has been maneuvering to destroy volunteer-built crisis shelters\, which continue to be a lifeline for people experiencing houselessness. As HMA’s waitlist for shelters grows (along with people forced onto the street)\, HRM attacks the homeless instead of the housing crisis. \n\n\n\nWe ask you to lend your voice to the chorus of caring and concerned residents of HRM to tell the city government this: \n\n\n\n“Stay out of the way if you can’t lend a hand.” \n\n\n\nPlease join us Sunday June 20th\, 2pm at the Old Central Library in Downtown Halifax.

As Chris explains\, “Fundamentally\, decolonizing means building relationships and raising awareness. We need settler support\, because the laws and structures that harm Indigenous peoples are put in place by a settler government. This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.” \n\n\n\nChris George is a Ph.D student in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. His graduate research focuses on Indigenous cultural and political resurgence. \n\n\n\nThe book club sessions are free and hosted online. SUMMARY:Queer Doula Toolkit Launch event
DESCRIPTION:https://fb.me/e/2e9sGonsX \n\n\n\nLike many spaces\, healthcare is built upon a history and continuing legacy of providing ciscentric and heteronormative care. The systemic mistreatment of 2SLGBTQ+ people within the healthcare system carries over into pregnancy and birthing spaces\, which can create experiences of alienation and trauma for queer birthing people and their families. \n\n\n\nThis project\, along with the work of Wellness Within’s Queer Doula Training Program\, aims to centre queer birth safety by contributing to queer birth education and increasing the number of queer-identified doulas in Nova Scotia. \n\n\n\nHosted by Wellness Within and NSPIRG \n\n\n\nWho: Toolkit Content Coordinators Nicole Marcoux and Jordan Roberts\, Queer Doula Coordinator Clark MacIntosh \n\n\n\nModerated by: Caitlin Hartlen\, Fierté Canada Pride’s Director at Large \n\n\n\nWhat: A moderated discussion about the creation of the Queer Doula Toolkit\, Wellness Within’s Doula Training Program\, and improving perinatal supports for queer families. \n\n\n\nWhen: June 17th\, 7:30pm ADT (5:30pm CT / 3:30pm PT) \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom. Register by emailing womenswellnesswithinns@gmail.com with the subject line “Queer Doula Toolkit Launch” \n\n\n\nSince going live on June 3rd\, the Queer Doula Toolkit has been downloaded and shared across Canada\, the US and even the UK! While we are thrilled at the early feedback and support for this project\, the lack of queer-centred doula and healthcare education has become glaringly obvious. In sharing our process and collaboration methods\, we hope to inspire additional research and capacity for providing queer competent health care on a broader level.*Live ASL interpretation will be available*

SUMMARY:Launching C.A.R.P. Nova Scotia's Position Paper: Working Together to Bring Home Care Home
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/765993967398142 \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (C.A.R.P.) Nova Scotia Chapter.COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on Canadians over the age of 60\, accounting for nearly 97% of all deaths in Canada. Though these effects have been more visible in long-term care (LTC) facilities\, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed an overwhelming strain on the entire continuing care sector\, including home care. \n\n\n\nThe system continues to be under immense pressure as it grapples with neglect as well as an aging population. As such\, there is an urgent need for significant investment and reform in continuing care. As part of a wider national advocacy campaign\, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (C.A.R.P.) Nova Scotia Chapter has developed five priority actions to transform home care in the province and across the country. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us for a panel discussion on C.A.R.P. SUMMARY:Still in a Prison Pandemic: The Need for Diversion\, Decarceration and Vaccination of Prisoners Now
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/524530211923462/ \n\n\n\nThroughout the current global pandemic\, the risks and impacts of COVID-19 have been felt most profoundly by people pushed to the margins\, including those living and working in congregate settings in so-called Canada. Jails\, prisons\, and penitentiaries have not been immune to this trend with an infection rate amongst incarcerated people and institutional staff several times that of the general population. \n\n\n\nAs the pandemic continues with more transmissible and virulent variants spreading across the country\, this webinar draws on the insights of currently and formerly incarcerated people\, their loved ones\, and abolitionist organizers engaged in prisoner solidarity and mutual aid work to explore multiple facets of the on-going prison pandemic. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will examine (a) the uneven use of diversion and decarceration measures that have unnecessarily exposed those behind bars to a greater risk of COVID-19 infections\, (b) the suppression of rights\, privileges and protections for prisoners alongside the ramping-up of torturous conditions of confinement in the name of public health\, and (c) the often politicized\, coercive and often ineffective roll-out of vaccinations in carceral settings. In assessing the violence of (pandemic) prisons\, panellists will highlight the need to work towards their abolition in our lifetime where choosing real safety will translate into building communities\, not cages. \n\n\n\nEvent Speakers: To be announced \n\n\n\nEvent Sponsors: Prison Pandemic Partnership\, Prisons and Community Health Support Partnership\, and the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons

SUMMARY:Invisible Hand: Rights of Nature documentary screening and Q and A
DESCRIPTION:June 14–15\, we invite you to watch a free screening of the award-winning Rights of Nature documentary\, Invisible Hand. It follows several communities as they fight back against big industry’s quest to offload toxic waste\, build more pipelines\, and develop the land at any cost—even if it means contaminating rivers and destroying ecosystems. The title\, Invisible Hand\, refers to the invisible hand of capitalism.  \n\n\n\nExecutive producer Mark Ruffalo explains\, “This [Rights of Nature] movement changes everything. It honors Indigenous wisdom and shifts our priorities. It restores balance by placing nature at the center of our decision-making processes and gives the power that corporations stole back to our communities.” \n\n\n\nThe free screening is available for 24 hours\, beginning Monday\, June 14 at 7:30pm AT. On Tuesday\, June 15 at 7:30pm AT there will be a virtual Q&A with community organizers from the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF)\, featured in the documentary.  \n\n\n\nThis screening is co-hosted by the Sierra Club Atlantic Canada Chapter and the newly formed Rights of Nature Network – Atlantic Canada. Register for the Zoom link\, updates and the password to watch the film here.

SUMMARY:Demand 10 on the 10th: 10 Permanent Paid Sick Days NOW!
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/499177324736838/ \n\n\n\nGather with a small group of your neighbours to push for 10 permanent paid sick days for workers in Nova Scotia. We will be organizing many simultaneous demonstrations at many locations throughout Nova Scotia on June 10th at 6pm. Fill out this form and we will match you up with 4-5 of your neighbours to be part of one of these protest pods. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/whhbZXPghd3XUf6X7 \n\n\n\n• West End Halifax (North St & Windsor)• North End Halifax (NW intersection of Robie & Young)• Dartmouth (Portland St. and Eisener Blvd.)• South End/Downtown (Sackville & Brunswick St)• Timberlea (TBD\, e-mail info@fightfor15halifax.ca)• Musquodoboit Harbour (East Petpeswick Rd & the 7)• New Glasgow (George St & Riverside Parkway)• Amherst (TBD\, e-mail info@fightfor15halifax.ca)• Sydney (TBD\, e-mail info@fightfor15halifax.ca) \n\n\n\nLow wage\, frontline workers have carried us through this pandemic: making the most sacrifices and taking the most risk. But these workers are barely scraping by\, and many cannot afford to miss work\, even when they feel sick. The provincial government’s solution – four temporary sick days paid by the province – is a short-term measure for a long term problem. If living with COVID is to be our reality going forward\, then 10 paid sick days must be a permanent fixture to protect workers and their families. \n\n\n\n*** Sign up to join a protest pod here: https://forms.gle/whhbZXPghd3XUf6X7**** \n\n\n\nWhether it is workers in part-time employment trying to string together multiple jobs in order to make ends meet\, or workers without paid sick days who can’t stay home from work at the first sign of symptoms because they can’t afford to lose pay\, fair wages and paid sick days must be central in how we face living with COVID\, Influenza\, and other deadly infectious diseases. The evidence shows paid sick days are effective at curbing transmission of infectious disease\, including COVID-19.•Yet\, 58% of workers across Canada have no paid sick days\, and that jumps to over 70% of low-income workers \n\n\n\n• Even 75% of workers in the service sector\, including food services\, and 50% in health & social services sectors where the risk of exposure is highest\, have no paid sick days.• No one should have to choose between staying home sick & paying the bills• Black\, Indigenous\, and workers of colour are over-represented in low-wage\, frontline work & are most at risk of becoming infected \n\n\n\nWe hear a lot about thanking essential workers\, but why is the government not protecting them with paid sick days? The CRSB has been widely criticized as inadequate to meeting the challenges presented by COVID-19. Ten employer-paid sick days a year are needed to ensure that no worker experiences a disruption in their pay by staying home when sick. \n\n\n\nNOTE: Protest Pods should still be socially distanced and wear masks.

Stay tuned here for more details and updates.  \n\n\n\nWHO: Speakers will include Stacey Gomez (No one is illegal – Halifax/Kjipuktuk\, Migrant Worker Rights Working Group)\, Shiva Nourpanah (Board member\, Halifax Refugee Clinic); Tari Ajadi (PhD student in Political Science at Dalhousie University) through a prerecorded video; and Monika Dutt (Public Health and Family Physician\, Ally Centre of Cape Breton) \n\n\n\nWhile the Nova Scotia government has stated that anyone in the province over the age of 12 is able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine\, there remain ongoing barriers for migrants in the current vaccine roll-out plan. Such barriers reflect ongoing and pervasive gaps in health care access for migrants\, including people without migration status\, refugee claimants\, international students and migrant workers.  \n\n\n\nAdvocates and health experts are calling for immediate action to ensure a safe\, accessible and just vaccine plan that leaves no one behind. A campaign video released on June 7th by the migrant justice organization No one is illegal – Halifax/Kjiputuk highlights widespread community support for vaccine access for all.  \n\n\n\n– 30 –  \n\n\n\nMedia Contact: \n\n\n\nNo One is Illegal – Halifax/Kjipuktuk \n\n\n\nNOII.Hfx@gmail.com  \n\n\n\nMedia Coverage: \n\n\n\nNova Scotia urged to deliver on promise of prioritizing migrant workers for COVID-19 vaccine \n\n\n\nToo many barriers to vaccine access for migrants\, open letter states \n\n\n\nIn Nova Scotia undocumented migrants may miss out on vaccination\, group fears

SUMMARY:The Prison is Always Spreading: Carceral Spaces\, Criminalization\, and Abolition in the Age of Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:Register in advance for this webinar: \n\n\n\nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KuUhMzvWSkWJfhOxwjjNSA \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n\n\n\nAs social isolation was enforced during the COVID19 outbreak\, one common public claim was to compare isolation to being in prison. These comparisons both minimize and erase the social death marked by constant and ongoing human rights violations in Canadian prisons\, while also normalizing carceral spaces. This paper examines the state of the prison during COVID19. While prisons became epicenters of disease\, at the same time\, the virus only exposed what is the day to day condition of the prisons as a place of isolation\, abuse\, lockdown\, and segregation. What does COVID19 reveal about states of confinement in carceral spaces\, including immigration detention\, forensics facilities\, and other institutional sites? How can we build upon release to think about a world beyond bars\, and to imagine and work for community sentencing and abolition? How do we push back against the creep of surveillance in a post COVID world?  \n\n\n\nEl Jones is a spoken word poet\, an educator\, journalist\, and abolitionist living in African Nova Scotia. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax. In 2016\, El was a recipient of the Burnley “Rocky” Jones human rights award for her community work and work in prison justice. She is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour\, a live radio show with incarcerated people on CKDU that creates space for people inside to share their creative work and discuss contemporary social and political issues. El was appointed the Nancy’s Chair of Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University for the 2017-2019 term. She is a winner of two Atlantic Journalism gold awards in 2018 and 2019. Her book of spoken word poetry\, Live from the Afrikan Resistance! was published by Roseway Press in 2014. El would like to pay tribute to the many nameless and unrecognized women whose work makes it possible for her to be here today. She is incoming Assistant Professor in Political and Canadian Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University.

SUMMARY:Decolonizing Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 2\, at 7:30pm\, we’re launching a biweekly Decolonizing Book Club\, guided by Mi’kmaw educator Chris George. As Chris explains\, “Fundamentally\, decolonizing means building relationships and raising awareness. We need settler support\, because the laws and structures that harm Indigenous peoples are put in place by a settler government. This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.” \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin by reading and discussing Whose Land Is It Anyway: A Manual for Decolonization\, which is available for free as a PDF\, followed by Unsettling Canada by Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ronald Derrickson. The book club sessions are free and will be hosted online. \n\n\n\nRegister here for the Zoom link and to receive book club updates.  \n\n\n\nChris George is a Ph.D student in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. His graduate research focuses on Indigenous cultural and political resurgence.  \n\n\n\nWe hope that settlers taking part in the Decolonizing Book Club will take some time to use the resources that we have suggested in our post\, Let’s Talk About Land Acknowledgments.
