Jails\, prisons\, and penitentiaries have not been immune to this trend with an infection rate amongst incarcerated people and institutional staff several times that of the general population.  \n\n\n\nAs the pandemic continues with more transmissible and virulent variants spreading across the country\, this webinar draws on the insights of currently and formerly incarcerated people\, their loved ones\, and abolitionist organizers engaged in prisoner solidarity and mutual aid work to explore multiple facets of the on-going prison pandemic.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers will examine (a) the uneven use of diversion and decarceration measures that have unnecessarily exposed those behind bars to a greater risk of COVID-19 infections\, (b) the suppression of rights\, privileges and protections for prisoners alongside the ramping-up of torturous conditions of confinement in the name of public health\, and (c) the often politicized\, coercive and often ineffective roll-out of vaccinations in carceral settings. The title\, Invisible Hand\, refers to the invisible hand of capitalism.  \n\n\n\nExecutive producer Mark Ruffalo explains\, “This [Rights of Nature] movement changes everything. It honors Indigenous wisdom and shifts our priorities. It restores balance by placing nature at the center of our decision-making processes and gives the power that corporations stole back to our communities.” \n\n\n\nThe free screening is available for 24 hours\, beginning Monday\, June 14 at 7:30pm AT. If living with COVID is to be our reality going forward\, then 10 paid sick days must be a permanent fixture to protect workers and their families. \n\n\n\n*** Sign up to join a protest pod here: https://forms.gle/whhbZXPghd3XUf6X7**** \n\n\n\nWhether it is workers in part-time employment trying to string together multiple jobs in order to make ends meet\, or workers without paid sick days who can’t stay home from work at the first sign of symptoms because they can’t afford to lose pay\, fair wages and paid sick days must be central in how we face living with COVID\, Influenza\, and other deadly infectious diseases.The evidence shows paid sick days are effective at curbing transmission of infectious disease\, including COVID-19.•Yet\, 58% of workers across Canada have no paid sick days\, and that jumps to over 70% of low-income workers \n\n\n\n• Even 75% of workers in the service sector\, including food services\, and 50% in health & social services sectors where the risk of exposure is highest\, have no paid sick days.• No one should have to choose between staying home sick & paying the bills• Black\, Indigenous\, and workers of colour are over-represented in low-wage\, frontline work & are most at risk of becoming infected \n\n\n\nWe hear a lot about thanking essential workers\, but why is the government not protecting them with paid sick days?The CRSB has been widely criticized as inadequate to meeting the challenges presented by COVID-19. SUMMARY:The Prison is Always Spreading: Carceral Spaces\, Criminalization\, and Abolition in the Age of Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:Register in advance for this webinar: \n\n\n\nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KuUhMzvWSkWJfhOxwjjNSA \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n\n\n\nAs social isolation was enforced during the COVID19 outbreak\, one common public claim was to compare isolation to being in prison. These comparisons both minimize and erase the social death marked by constant and ongoing human rights violations in Canadian prisons\, while also normalizing carceral spaces. This paper examines the state of the prison during COVID19. While prisons became epicenters of disease\, at the same time\, the virus only exposed what is the day to day condition of the prisons as a place of isolation\, abuse\, lockdown\, and segregation. What does COVID19 reveal about states of confinement in carceral spaces\, including immigration detention\, forensics facilities\, and other institutional sites? How can we build upon release to think about a world beyond bars\, and to imagine and work for community sentencing and abolition? How do we push back against the creep of surveillance in a post COVID world?  \n\n\n\nEl Jones is a spoken word poet\, an educator\, journalist\, and abolitionist living in African Nova Scotia. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax. In 2016\, El was a recipient of the Burnley “Rocky” Jones human rights award for her community work and work in prison justice. She is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour\, a live radio show with incarcerated people on CKDU that creates space for people inside to share their creative work and discuss contemporary social and political issues. El was appointed the Nancy’s Chair of Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University for the 2017-2019 term. She is a winner of two Atlantic Journalism gold awards in 2018 and 2019. Her book of spoken word poetry\, Live from the Afrikan Resistance! was published by Roseway Press in 2014. El would like to pay tribute to the many nameless and unrecognized women whose work makes it possible for her to be here today. She is incoming Assistant Professor in Political and Canadian Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University.

As Chris explains\, “Fundamentally\, decolonizing means building relationships and raising awareness. We need settler support\, because the laws and structures that harm Indigenous peoples are put in place by a settler government. This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.” \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin by reading and discussing Whose Land Is It Anyway: A Manual for Decolonization\, which is available for free as a PDF\, followed by Unsettling Canada by Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ronald Derrickson. Prior to this appointment she worked at McGill University (Montreal) for seventeen years. Nelson has made ground-breaking contributions to the fields of the Visual Culture of Slavery\, Race and Representation\, and Black Canadian Studies. She has published seven books including The Color of Stone: Sculpting the Black Female Subject in Nineteenth-Century America (2007)\, Slavery\, Geography\, and Empire in Nineteenth-Century Marine Landscapes of Montreal and Jamaica (2016)\, and Towards an African Canadian Art History: Art\, Memory\, and Resistance (2018). She is actively engaged with lay audiences through her media work including ABC\, CBC\, CTV\, and City TV News\, The Boston Globe\, BBC One “Fake or Fortune\,” and PBS “Finding your Roots”. She blogs for the Huffington Post Canada and writes for The Walrus. In 2017\, she was the William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University.
