Drawing from Angélique’s experience\, Dr Afua Cooper uses 15 years of research to shed new light on a rebellious Portuguese-born Black woman who refused to accept the offer for indentured servitude. He will use the name “Jim” for this event\, and will be discussing salmon fishery issues in British Columbia. We also welcome Nova Scotia’s Chris Frazer\, a settler professor of Latin American history at StFX University living and working in Mi’kma’ki\, the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq people. He is actively in solidarity with Mi’kmaq and other indigenous peoples. During the recent struggles to assert the right to moderate living by fishing lobster\, Frazer helped bring together solidarity activists to raise money and rallies to support Mi’kmaq fishers. Born in Vancouver and raised in Alberta\, Frazer has been a member of the Communist Party for more than 40 years\, and served as the central organizer and then leader of the Young Communist League from 1985-1990. DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Canada Book Launch for N’in D’la Owey Innklan: Mi’kmaq Sojourns in England  \n\n\n\nNovel by Professor Bonita Lawrence explores five centuries of interconnections between Mi’kmaq people and London \n\n\n\nMonday\, February 8 (Halifax\, NS) –  The Atlantic Canada book launch for Dr. Bonita Lawrence’s new novel N’in D’la Owey Innklan: Mi’kmaq Sojourns in England will be hosted by Dalhousie University Libraries and will take place virtually on Thursday\, February 11 at 7 p.m. (AST). At the launch\, Dr. Lawrence will be joined by guests Marie Battiste\, Hannah Beaulieu\, Sean Hillier\, and Cathy Martin. \n\n\n\nN’in D’la Owey Innklan: Mi’kmaq Sojourns in England is an historical novel beginning in 1497 that takes the reader on a series of vignettes through five centuries of interconnections between Mi’kmaq people and London. Each character begins their story in different regions of the Mi’kmaq world\, and they end up in London for various reasons—ranging from being kidnapped or enslaved in early years of contact\, to being impressed into the British Navy or to attend university. The novel encompasses descriptive scenes of London in different eras\, alternately addressing the eroticism of lovers\, the wide-ranging lives of whalers and sailors\, the horrors of nursing during World War I and the overwrought world of heroin users in late 1970s East London\, interspersed with occasional short pages of intellectual commentary. Ultimately\, it is a labour of love for homelands lost. (Taken from austinmacauley.com) \n\n\n\nDr. Lawrence is a professor in the Department of Humanities at York University and is a founding member of the Indigenous Studies program. She is of Mi’kmaq\, Acadian\, and English ancestry. In addition to this novel\, she has authored two academic books\, Fractured Homeland: Federal Recognition and Algonquin Identity in Ontario and “Real” Indians and Others: Mixed-Race Urban Native People and Indigenous Nationhood. With Kim Anderson\, she co-authored a collection of essays entitled Strong Women Stories: Native Vision and Community Survival.

LTC facilities account for nearly 11% of COVID-19 cases in Canada and over 70% of total deaths. While the largest proportion of cases in Canada are among those 20-29\, nearly 97% of deaths have been among Canadians over the age of 60. \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has exposed long-standing deficiencies and challenges in the delivery of long-term care in Canada. Many stakeholders are calling for national standards\, but there are questions about the best approach. Should we amend the Canada Health Act to include LTC or develop new legislation? Long standing staffing challenges will also need to be addressed\, such as equitable and permanent pay and benefits for care aides\, mental health supports for all staff; and improved and required data collection. Dr. Fearon uses literary and visual arts to communicate\, in a structured\, creative\, and accessible form\, insights gleaned from stories shared by Black Canadian mothers. \n\n\n\nThe Dalhousie Feminist Seminar Series brings together faculty and students from across Dalhousie\, our colleagues at other institutions in Halifax and elsewhere\, and members of the community interested in feminist research and scholarship to present and engage with one another’s work in a collegial and supportive environment. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax. In 2016\, El was a recipient of the Burnley “Rocky” Jones human rights award for her community work in prison justice. \n\n\n\nAbout Jennifer Taylor: \n\n\n\nJennifer Taylor is a Research Lawyer at Steward McKelvey in Halifax\, NS. She conducts in-depth legal research in all areas of law and turns complex legal problems into practical advice. She is also a member of the Nova Scotia Policing Working Group. \n\n\n\nAbout Robert S. Wright: \n\n\n\nRobert Wright is a Social Worker and Sociologist who works in the fields of education\, child welfare\, cultural competence\, and more. He promotes lasting systemic change through social policy advocacy. Locally\, we make choices about which natural areas stay\, and which ones get paved over. The proposed Sandy Lake – Sackville River Regional Park (in Halifax) is at this crossroad. This area has been proposed for protection for 50 years… and its fate may be sealed in 2021\, depending on the choices we make. In this talk\, Karen McKendry will share the story of Sandy Lake and Sackville River as a microcosm of the global forces that point us to the areas that must stay intact to survive\, yet pull us towards continuing our consumption of the landscape. \n\n\n\nKaren McKendry spent her childhood exploring the woods and waters of Ontario and Quebec. Her passion for the environment\, paired with a lot of hard work\, has earned her a BSc. in Ecology\, and Masters of Environmental Studies. Since moving to Nova Scotia in 2005\, Karen has worked as a conservation planner and biologist\, and environmental advocate. With Ecology Action Centre she tackles Wilderness-related issues\, which includes advocating for better protection of our biodiversity through the creation of parks and protected areas\, education\, and other means.
