On March 27th\, 1996\, a collection of activists from the community as well as local union members\, joined together in a 133 day protest by occupying the offices of the Canada Employment Centre located at 2089 Gottingen Street in North end Halifax. This remarkable act of worker and community resistance still holds the record as Canada’s longest occupation of a Federal Government office in the history of Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCredit: Lynn Jones African Canadian and Diaspora Heritage Collection \n\n\n\nDr. Lynn Jones & Carolann Wright sharing firsthand accounts of memories of their involvement in the landmark occupation. The evening will also feature stellar performances by Corey Adams\, Keonte Beals\, Linda Carvery\, El Jones\, and MAJE. DESCRIPTION:RALLY THIS SATURDAY! 11am—City Hall  \n\n\n\n•To protest the city’s apathy-based approach to houselessness  \n\n\n\n•To demand that the unhoused be treated with dignity  \n\n\n\n•To call for a moratorium on evictions of those living in tents & crisis shelters  \n\n\n\n#HousingForAll #HousingIsAHumanRight \n\n\n\nfb event here \n\n\n\nThis Saturday marks one month since the brutal evictions against unhoused people living in Halifax Municipal parks. Since that time\, this city’s unhoused residents have lived in fear and constant anxiety of having nowhere to go to safely shelter: the shelters are full\, tents & crisis shelters are criminalized\, and hotel rooms are unavailable and in many cases\, inappropriate and unreliable.  \n\n\n\nPeoples Park was created out of the need for a safe space to shelter\, and is a compassionate response to the crisis that the city created with these evictions. Since our founding on August 18\, we have grown to over 20 residents as the city continues to criminalize the survival strategies of its unhoused residents. Further\, the careless manner in which the city promised and managed hotel rooms as an interim solution has only exacerbated trauma and distrust.  \n\n\n\nWe are demanding a moratorium on evictions from municipal properties\, as existed prior to the Aug 18 evictions. We need an apology from the city and a promise to do better\, to start to repair the harm caused by the indignity with which unhoused people have been treated. And we need all levels of government and social services to work towards finding appropriate interim solutions to the houseless crisis\, as well as long term options such as supportive housing and truly affordable housing.

DESCRIPTION:Our new government has made it clear they’re not extending rent control past the state of emergency – tenants need to fight to keep the cap in place! Join us for a community event and peaceful protest on September 23rd at the NS legislature – ALL DAY! \n\n\n\nSince the temporary rent cap was put in place\, ACORN has been hearing stories and receiving rent increases from tenants whose landlords intend to raise rents after the cap lifts. “What we’re seeing is rent increases where the landlord says ‘Your rent is going up by the legal 2%\, unless the state of emergency lifts in which case it will go up $100-$1000\,” says Halifax-Peninsula Chair Hannah Wood. “We’ve seen rent increases like these for as much as $2000.” \n\n\n\nEven though these rent increases are illegal\, they have become common since the government made it clear they don’t intend to prosecute landlords who violate the 2% rent cap.  \n\n\n\nMarjike Grijm\, Chair of the Dartmouth chapter of ACORN\, writes: “This isn’t just an issue with the downtown core\, people are even getting priced out of traditionally affordable neighbourhoods like Highfield\, where a one bedroom apartment can go for as much as $1200 these days.” She disputes claims that the housing crisis was caused by the pandemic\, “We were in a crisis before COVID.  \n\n\n\nCost of living keeps skyrocketing\, rents are skyrocketing\, but our wages stay the same. Developments that go up in this city aren’t affordable units\, and landlords bring up the rent knowing full well that tenants have no other option but to pay. This is protected by the treaties and affirmed by the Supreme Court in 1999. Treaty rights are enshrined in Canadian law through the constitution\, which is the highest law in the Canadian legal system. However\, despite these rights\, the Department of Fisheries & Ocean (DFO) has been harassing Mi’kmaw fishers –even arresting youth and a Mi’kmaw chief– asserting this treaty right.

DESCRIPTION:Wellness Within is a registered non-profit organization working for reproductive justice\, prison abolition\, and health equity in K’jipuktuk\, Mi’kma’ki (Halifax\, Nova Scotia). September 28 is recognized around the world as a day to work towards safer access to abortion everywhere\, for everyone. \n\n\n\nAbortion is completely decriminalized in Canada. There are no legal limitations on gestational age\, no requirements for parental consent\, or other laws interfering with patient experience. Medication abortion is widely available through primary care providers. From a regulatory perspective\, Canada has the best access to abortion in the world. \n\n\n\nOne in three people with a uterus will have an abortion in their lifetime. Abortion is a common\, normal\, and clinically safe experience in Canada. But there is more to safety than the clinical intervention itself.  Stigma\, travel\, and personal costs impede patient safety. \n\n\n\nNon-citizens and people without provincial/territorial health cards lack access to publicly funded care. Abortion care providers are spread out across the country and may be difficult or expensive to reach. Although abortion is safe and very common\, it continues to be excluded from most health care professional educational programs. Lack of representation of Black\, Indigenous\, people of colour and 2SLGTBQIA+ people in abortion care provision results in culturally unsafe care. Even while abortion is publicly funded\, contraception is not. \n\n\n\nWe can make this better.
