Tenants and low-income community members are gathering in front of the Premier’s office to lay out demands for the new Premier and demand action on the housing crisis and others.

For more details and to speak with spokespeople contact ACORN organizer Sydnee Blum at halifax@acorncanada.org

(Halifax, NS)  To low- and moderate-income people, Stephen McNeil’s departure represents an opportunity to change course after a government that they feel has left them behind. ACORN members who have been directly affected by these policies will be speaking about their experiences and their demands on the new Premier.

WHAT: Demonstration and Press Conference

WHEN: Saturday, January 30th at 12:15pm

WHERE: One Government Place – 1713 Barrington St. Halifax

Janice Pace, Co-Chair of the Halifax-Peninsula Chapter and a single mother on Income Assistance explains: “ACORN’s Provincial platform has long included housing recommendations like Rent Control with Vacancy Control, Inclusionary Zoning, and Banning Fixed-Term Leases. As well as our COVID-19 demands to ban evictions and put those who are sleeping on the streets or in shelters into vacant hotels. But we also understand these issues do not exist in a vacuum. Our members will be renewing calls to immediately raise the rates of Income Assistance and Disability to a living standard, and raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.”

Janice, among others, will be speaking on Saturday and demonstrating along with ACORN members from across the city.
