ACORN Nova Scotia and North End Residents to March on Condo Developer Demanding Affordable Housing

July 9, 2016 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

North End residents and members of the antipoverty organization ACORN Nova Scotia are planning a demonstration against gentrification in North End Halifax.

The North End has been rapidly gentrified in recent years: affordable housing has been demolished and sold off, rents have risen, and an influx luxury condominiums and high-end businesses hasve displaced many longtime residents.

“It’s a takeover. It’s obvious, and it’s outrageous” Said Darryl King, the CoChair of the NorthCentral Halifax chapter of ACORN “You never see these developers building housing that the people here can afford. There’s less and less all the time. But they’re building these $300,000 condos. They have no concern for the neighbourhood they work in, or the people who are being pushed out.”

ACORN members and allies will march on a local developer to demand the conversion of unsold condominium units into affordable housing. “Our message is simple: if you want to come into our neighbourhood and build, you’ve got to build something for the people who live here.” said Bonnie Barrett, the Chair of Halifax ACORN “We won’t allow our community to be erased. We won’t disapear quietly into the night. We’re standing up andfighting back.”
