Candlelight vigil for Iraq
July 12, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
A Candlelight Vigil is being organized for Tuesday night to commemorate, respect and honor the victims of the violent and obscene tragedies that took place in Baghdad, Iraq on Sunday.
Please join for a peaceful, silent vigil to mourn the senseless violence and loss of life Iraq and to stand together to show support as global citizens, united under our shared values of Humanity
We will gather at the corner of Spring Garden Rd and South Park St in silence.
This is a family-friendly event, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.
This is NOT a political nor is it a religious event, rather it is an opportunity to gather and unite individuals, families, and all of our international residents in Halifax.
This is a chance to take a stand, to say “NO” to violence and fear.
It is an opportunity for the greater community to stand together in solidarity for the purpose of peace and justice and to demonstrate human and spiritual respect.
A week ago a suicide truck bomb ripped through Baghdad, families are still hoping that rescuers searching through the rubble can locate the bodies of their loved ones.
The Saturday night attack on a busy shopping district was the deadliest single incident in the Iraq’s war-weary capital in years, killing more than 300 people.
Crews are still on the scene in the Karrada neighbourhood where the blast occurred, trying to pull bodies from the devastation.
And 81 of the bodies are so charred, DNA testing will need to be conducted in order to identify them.
One couple at the scene was searching for their teenage son who’d gone to a cafe with his friends to celebrate his birthday.
Another man was looking for five of his relatives, including children, who were buying new clothes for Eid-al-Fitr – the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. It was the latest in a string of assaults during the holy month for Muslims, a period of fasting and prayer, and also a time when jihadists launch operations against those they regard as their enemies.
