Decolonizing Book Club

June 2, 2021 @ 7:30 pm 9:00 pm

Wednesday, June 2, at 7:30pm, we’re launching a biweekly Decolonizing Book Club, guided by Mi’kmaw educator Chris George. As Chris explains, “Fundamentally, decolonizing means building relationships and raising awareness. We need settler support, because the laws and structures that harm Indigenous peoples are put in place by a settler government. This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.”

We’ll begin by reading and discussing Whose Land Is It Anyway: A Manual for Decolonization, which is available for free as a PDF, followed by Unsettling Canada by Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ronald Derrickson. The book club sessions are free and will be hosted online.

Register here for the Zoom link and to receive book club updates.

Chris George is a Ph.D student in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. His graduate research focuses on Indigenous cultural and political resurgence.

We hope that settlers taking part in the Decolonizing Book Club will take some time to use the resources that we have suggested in our post, Let’s Talk About Land Acknowledgments.
