MetCap Living Tenants Demand Landlord Licensing
July 5, 2016 @ 2:15 pm - 3:00 pm
Halifax, N.S. – Tenants renting in private housing managed by the MetCap Living Inc. have been living in slum conditions with bedbugs, mice, mold, and more.
“When I first moved in, there were used needles stuck in the carpet,” says Katarina Jordan-Baynell, a MetCap tenant and member of the Dartmouth ACORN chapter. “With a young child, these oversights and lack of repairs are very concerning.” Jordan-Baynell says that a request to repair her kitchen sink took months to fulfill, and the repairperson was disrespectful when he finally did arrive.
“MetCap can take one, three, or even six months to address issues within their buildings,” says Jonethan Brigley, a MetCap tenant and Chair of the Dartmouth ACORN chapter. “Meanwhile, tenants are responsible for paying their rent on time every month or else they risk being evicted.” Brigley says with a proactive landlord licensing system, landlords will be held accountable to maintain their buildings.
On Tuesday, July 5th at 2pm tenants from Spryfield, Dartmouth, and Halifax will be coming together to protest the poor living conditions. They will be demonstrating out front of a MetCap Living management office on 32 Primrose Street in Dartmouth.
