Rally at the DFO to protest their treatment of the livelihood fisheries

A rally Thursday is calling attention to the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s violations of Mi’kmaw Treaty Rights in recent months.  

All Mi’kmaq people have the right to fish for a moderate livelihood. This is protected by the treaties and affirmed by the Supreme Court in 1999. Treaty rights are enshrined in Canadian law through the constitution, which is the highest law in the Canadian legal system. However, despite these rights, the Department of Fisheries & Ocean (DFO) has been harassing Mi’kmaw fishers –even arresting youth and a Mi’kmaw chief– asserting this treaty right.
