The following letter to the editor, about the firing of NSCAD president Aoife Mac Namara by its board of directors, was published in the Chronicle Herald on Friday July 31, and then, after mere hours, abruptly taken down again.

Press release issued by the NS Arts Educators Society: “The Board of Governors’ decision to remove President Aoiffe Mac Namara from her duties at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design appears to deny her efforts to lead the University through systemic anti-racism changes. We believe this jeopardizes the future of the University’s reputation as a world leader in fine arts education,”
Media release: Through a secure online platform and with a secret ballot available from July 6-8, full and part time faculty, librarians and technicians at NSCAD University powerfully expressed their lack of confidence in the Board of Governors with 95.6% of members voting and 96.3% of those voting NO CONFIDENCE in the Board.
PSA: Friends of NSCAD, a longstanding group of faculty, staff students, alumni and concerned citizens, have initiated a petition demanding the immediate reinstatement of abruptly fired NSCAD president Aoife Mac Namara.
Media release: Late last week, the Board of Governors of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University) removed the President, Dr. Aoife Mac Namara. The President had been in her post for less than a year. There was no consultation with the University community. Members of the Faculty Union Executive are shocked and appalled at the actions of the Board who made this decision in the middle of a global pandemic.
Students at NSCAD University, the venerable post-secondary art school in Halifax, are worried that tuition fees will be raised once again this year. How are students going to pay the already very high fees, especially Black, Indigenous and POC students who are disproportionately affected by the coronavirus crisis? the student union asks.
Students at NSCAD university are currently fighting the threat of a tuition increase in the middle of a global pandemic. Tuition at NSCAD University is now the highest of any Arts University in the country where students are paying on average $2000 more a year.
