News brief: Out of the Cold lease extended until June 30th
Good news! The Out of the Cold shelter, which was set to close at the end of April, will be able to stay open until June 30th, thanks to some federal funding and a landlord willing to extend the lease until then. Of course Out of the Cold will face the same problem again come July. We speak with Out of the Cold’s executive director Michelle Mallette about what needs to happen.

The decision by front line workers at the Out of the Cold Community Association to unionize is mostly about making sure that the current positive working conditions continue, and maybe to offer a bit of an example to care sector workers elsewhere who aren’t as fortunate.
Halifax Housing Symposium: “Legislation can change things overnight, if the will is there”
More than 250 people took part in an online Halifax Housing Symposium Monday. The event was hosted by the Housing and Homelessness Partnership. Stephen Wentzell attended and heard from advocates and people directly affected by rising rents, evictions, the pandemic and skyrocketing homelessness.
