KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – This weekend’s video features the amazing R&B singer Cyndi Cain, with her song Stand Up, a tribute to Viola Desmond. Desmond was the Black woman who refused to leave the whites only section of the movie theatre in New Glasgow, not all that long ago.
On Thursday night (May 3) Cain will be one of the artists featured at the Sankofa singer/songwriter circle, four artists paying tribute to the legendary a capella group Four the Moment. Other artists performing that night are Pat Watson, Kwento, and Zamani.
By the way, Thursday’s performance is part of the Mayworks Halifax festival, with lots of pretty amazing performances and exhibits that runs from May 1 to May 12. Check out the program here.

If you can, please support the Nova Scotia Advocate so that it can continue to cover issues such as poverty, racism, exclusion, workers’ rights and the environment in Nova Scotia. A paywall is not an option, since it would exclude many readers who don’t have any disposable income at all. We rely entirely on one-time donations and a tiny but mighty group of dedicated monthly sustainers.
