PSA: Statement on continued anti-Black racism inflicted by Halifax police

Kayla Borden, YouTube, via Halifax Examiner

In the early hours of Tuesday July 28, 2020 Kayla Borden was racially profiled, pulled over, and arrested without cause by the Halifax Regional Police. Women’s Wellness Within is demanding an end to anti-Black systemic racism inflicted by law enforcement in Halifax.

Global protests responding to systemic racism in law enforcement have prompted calls for change including defunding policing, increased accountability, and reinvesting in community-based services. This incident of racial profiling occured only one month after several Black Lives Matters rallies in Halifax brought large crowds together in solidarity with marches across the region, the country and the continent. We are once again calling out the ongoing systemic racism and inaction from the Halifax Regional Police.

WWW demands that the HRP adopt a trauma-informed, intersectional gender and race-based lens for all interactions with the public and the criminalized. We demand that the practice of racist street checks end.

Racialized, queer women in Halifax deserve better. We will continue to hold law enforcement accountable until justice is served for Black and Indigenous people.
