For Immediate Release

Dec 14th 2020

No Heat for the Holidays: ACORN CAPREIT Tenant Union (ACTU) organizing against lack of maintenance, heat, and pest issues in building.

CAPREIT, Canada’s largest landlord, has a history of keeping the heat off on tenants, not doing repairs, and discriminating against low-income and ESL tenants.

Halifax, NS CAPREIT is making $1000/minute in profit and still refusing to repair the heat in the apartment buildings so tenants don’t freeze in their units. Tenants at Harbour View Towers are having a lobby meeting and rallying on Tuesday, December 15th to get CAPREIT to fix the heat and force the landlord to do capital repairs and maintenance – including pest treatment.

Heat Harbour View! – ACTU

Where: Courtyard at 2334 Longard Plaza, Halifax, NS

When: Tuesday, December, 15th at 12:30PM

Background:

ACORN CAPREIT Tenant Union was recently organized by CAPREIT tenants, fed up with rent increases and conditions in buildings, and ACORN’s national leadership, who have been looking into the ravaging effects REITs are having on Canada’s affordable housing market.

In its recent report ACORN details how CAPREIT – Canada’s largest Real Estate Investment Trust – continues to rake in record profits throughout the pandemic, systematically increase rent, and pay almost no corporate income tax.
