In an uplifting display of solidarity some 50 people, trade union activists, members of the faith community, and others, gathered in front of Founders Square in downtown Halifax at noon today to offer support to the seven Black cleaners who were recently unjustly fired, as if their lives don’t count.
Cafeteria workers at Halifax and Dartmouth Community College campuses join union
Cafeteria workers at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) campuses in Dartmouth and Halifax voted overwhelmingly to join the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2. Underpaid, overworked and working under unsafe conditions, convincing the workers wasn’t very difficult, says organizer Darius Mirshahi.
Overworked and underpaid Community College food service workers turn to union
Overworked, not paid enough and working in unsafe conditions, food workers at Nova Scotia Community College campuses in Dartmouth and Halifax set their minds on joining a union. Earlier this month the 25 or so Chartwells workers voted on joining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2. The vote hasn’t been counted yet, but workers and the union are confident they won. We talk with two workers and an SEIU organizer.
Unions want in on Bill 148 review by NS Court of Appeal
Seven unions will file to be added to the partial review of Bill 148 by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal initiated by the Nova Scotia government. This was the announcement at this morning’s joint news conference, that also served to push back on the government’s narrative on the legislation.
