Media release: Former Union of Veterans’ Affairs Employees national president seeks NDP nomination

For immediate release

Carl Gannon Jr, a former national president of the Union of Veterans’ Affairs Employees (UVAE), is today announcing his intention to seek the NDP nomination in Sackville– Preston–Chezzetcook.

“I want to bring my experience working with leaders across our country to ensure a better deal for veterans to the House of Commons,” says Gannon.

Gannon, a Veterans Affairs Canada employee for more than a decade, was national president of UVAE, a PSAC component, from 2014 to 2018.

“As president of UVAE,” says Gannon, “we saw national caseloads decrease from 75:1 to 25:1 and that more than 600 laid off Veterans Affairs employees rehired. We saved the department and we saved lives of Canadian heroes.”

Before working for Veterans Affairs, Gannon was a small business consultant in the Halifax region and was recognized by the Business Development Bank of Canada for his work. Gannon is also a well regarded basketball coach and a father of five.

Gannon is excited to use practical insights into the legislative process to ensure a better deal with veterans and for everyone in Sackville–Preston–Chezzetcook.

“It’s very important for an MP to understand how legislation is developed,” says Gannon. “I’m excited to use my experience as a national union president and as a small business consultant to ensure that veterans and everyone in Sackville–Preston– Chezzetcook is well represented in Ottawa again.”
