For Immediate Release: Launch of Queer Doula Toolkit

June 16, 2021

Wellness Within: An Organization for Health and Justice invite all to join us for the official launch of the Queer Doula Toolkit, by zoom on June 17 at 730pm AT.

Wellness Within is a registered non-profit organization working to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights for people experiencing criminalization in Nova Scotia. WW provides volunteer doula support to people incarcerated in the provincial jail, federal prison and youth detention centre in the province. WW works to address discrimination and human rights abuses experienced by pregnant and birthing people. WW hosts this event in collaboration with NSPIRG: Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group.

Like many spaces, healthcare is built upon a history and continuing legacy of providing ciscentric and heteronormative care. The systemic mistreatment of 2SLGBTQ+ people within the healthcare system carries over into pregnancy and birthing spaces, which can create experiences of alienation and trauma for queer birthing people and their families. This project, along with the work of Wellness Within’s Queer Doula Training Program, aims to centre queer birth safety by contributing to queer birth education and increasing the number of queer-identified doulas in Nova Scotia. The Queer Doula Toolkit was created through a consultative process, led by Nicole Marcoux and Jordan Roberts, during the fall of 2020. The toolkit is beautifully illustrated by artists Julia Hutt and Audrey Chan. Funding for this initiative was provided by the Tegan and Sara Foundation. Since going live on June 3rd, the Queer Doula Toolkit has been downloaded and shared across Canada, the US and internationally.
