Judy Haiven looks at political donations from developers and big ticket business interests to council candidates. “Accepting money from developers sets a tone that creates apathy and even cynicism about politics and politicians,” she writes.

We do have an exceptionally low percentage of women on council, but in keeping with many other cities we also have a low percentage of Black, Brown or Indigenous councilors. Halifax has no noticeably disabled councillors. All this is to say that when you cast your ballot in 25 days, think about equity.
In Nova Scotia, Labour Day is one of the six paid holidays in the year. If your workplace is closed that day, or you do not work that day, you are entitled to a day off with pay. But there is more. Judy Haiven explains.
Judy Haiven: “Now McNeil and Dr Strang are screwing down the lid on long term care facilities so that Covid cannot creep in, but neither can the joy of living and the celebration of long lives lived. Relatives and long term care residents are demanding a loosening of restrictions and a respect that, so far, this government has not paid them.”
Ending CERB and replacing it with EI will be a disaster, as we are far from beyond Covid’s economic blow to the economy. Canadians will not be able to pay their rent and feed their families.
