Statement by Claudia Chender on the Burnside Jail Protest

Dartmouth – Claudia Chender, NDP Justice Spokesperson, made the following statement on the ongoing protests inside the Burnside Jail:

“It’s clear that there are problems in Nova Scotia’s correctional facilities. Inmates have highlighted many serious issues including lack of rehabilitation programs in the jail, access to the library, and contact visits with their families. There are also ongoing concerns about access to health care, how segregation, or solitary confinement is used, and questions about the health and safety of the living quarters for incarcerated people and working environment for employees at the jail. I urge the Minister of Justice to take meaningful action to address the concerns that have been raised at Burnside.”

Inmates at the Burnside Jail have been participating in a prison strike since August 21.
