Press release: Women’s Wellness Within demands #JusticeForRegis

For Immediate Release

Thursday May 28, 2020 (K’jiuktuk – Halifax, NS) – Women’s Wellness Within demands #JusticeForRegis, a 29 year old Afro-Indigenous woman who was killed after Toronto Police came to her home last night.

Korchinski-Paquet’s mother, Claudette Clayton, has publicly stated Regis was pushed to her death. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Korchinski-Paquet in Nova Scotia and across the country. We demand an immediate, independent inquiry.

As noted by journalist and author Desmond Cole, Regis’ death follows three other recent killings of Black and Indigenous people by police in Canada: D’Andre Campbell was killed by Peel police on April 7. Winnipeg police killed Eishia Hudson, a child, on April 8. On April 9, Winnipeg police killed Jason Collins.

WWW works to advance reproductive justice for people experiencing criminalization. Police violence against Black, brown and Indigenous people in Canada must stop. The solution is not more training or investment in policing but rather, disarming and defunding.
