Media release: ACORN Tenant Unions across the HRM unite to renew calls for Landlord Licensing

ACORN kicks off a month of actions leading up to the municipal election with a tenant rally.

For Release, August 28th, 2020.

(Halifax, NS) Across the HRM, tenants – especially low-income tenants, newcomers, students, and families – are being taken advantage of by predatory landlords. People are living in dirty and unsafe conditions because their landlords don’t do repairs or take care of pests.

The ACORN tenants union is organized and fighting back against these conditions! Tenants are tired of dealing with landlords that are neglecting their units – we’re calling on the city to enact a proactive system to hold landlords accountable and keep units up to standard!

What: Defend Our Homes – Rally for Better Housing Where: The Wave – Halifax Waterfront When: Saturday, August 29th at 1pm

This rally kicks off a month of actions for better conditions. We’ve had tenants from across the HRM nominate their landlords for Halifax’s Slumlord of the Year – and are planning a month of awards and actions to force landlords to deal with these issues and put pressure on the city to pass a comprehensive Landlord Licensing system ahead of the election!
