PSA: Black Lives Matter picnic

Hutt Lake Rd, Chester Basin, NS B0J, Canada

Public · Hosted by People of the South Shore and The Biscuit Eater Cafe and Bookstore

Black youth on the South Shore are organizing a Black Lives Matter picnic with their supporters on August 30 at 3pm at Hutt Lake in Chester, please come.

This picnic is a Black youth response to the hate crime that happened August 15, 2020 at Hutt Lake, a local swimming spot in Chester, NS when a group of families including a Black man and 9 year old child were threatened by local youth waving a noose and confederate flag who made racists threats in person and publicly online.

The RCMP’s lack of action, refusal to press charges, or treat this behaviour as hate crimes is an example of the systemic racism and violence Black, Indigenous, and people of colour face daily in our communities and is not an isolated incident.

On August 30th we will make sure BIPOC families can swim, picnic, rest, and enjoy the summer Sunday together in safety and solidarity while sending a clear message to racists and white supremacists on the South Shore that Black lives matter to us.

Please respect social distancing rules and bring your mask!

The Biscuit Eater in Mahone Bay & friends will be bringing a bunch of picnic lunches incase anyone needs one + extra masks, water, and hand sanitizer. Want to attend but need transportation? Get in touch & we’ll make sure BIPOC families and supporters who want to be there can make it.
