October 9, 2020 – On October 7th, the migrant justice group No one is illegal – Halifax/K’jipuktuk (NOII-Hfx) sent an questionnaire to candidates in the upcoming municipal elections on the topic of immigration. Thus far, 15 candidates have responded to the questionnaire.

“We know that municipal leaders can play an important role in advocating for migrant rights,” reads an excerpt from the questionnaire.

In May, 50 elected provincial and municipal representatives from each of Canada’s provinces issued a statement calling on the federal government to extend income supports to all migrant and undocumented workers, including those outside the country.

The questionnaire asks whether the candidates support full and permanent immigration status for all migrants, as well as healthcare for all and municipal services for all, regardless of immigration status.

Candidates’ responses will be published on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.
