This is day 13 of Jacob Fillmore’s hunger strike. Here is his letter to Premier Iain Rankin: “I strongly believe that Nova Scotia could be a global climate leader. You have the power, and the responsibility, to lead Nova Scotia into a new era of climate action and respect for the natural environment. I hope you will do what must be done to protect future generations.”
News release: Thirteen community organizations call on government to ban illegal practice on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. After countless reviews, reports and public meetings, the Nova Scotia government finally directed police to end the practice in October of 2019. But there was a glaring exception to the directive: police were still permitted to conduct street checks if they judged that an individual was involved in “suspicious activity.”

Despite all the soundbites and nice words from Premier Rankin, he needs to show Nova Scotians that his actions will back his words if he wants to stay on as premier in the next election. The next provincial budget must show that good-paying jobs will bring stability to the economy.

NOFRAC, along with environmental groups in Quebec, New Brunswick, Alberta and Germany, sent a letter last week to the prime minister, the permier of Nova Scotia and other federal and provincial politicians to share their concerns about the Goldboro LNG project, including its request for nearly $1 billion in federal support. The letter touches on financial risks as well as concerns re climate change, an apparent lack of consultation with Mi’kmaq First Nations, the presence of men camps, and more.

We are accustomed to weave our way past turning drivers on signalized intersections with a mixture of luck and skill. Signalized intersections are known to be treacherous for vulnerable road users and account for around 40% of pedestrian incidents within the municipality. Yesterday a 75 year-old citizen of Halifax was left with life threatening injuries after being struck on a crosswalk by the driver of a truck.
We have been talking about it for decades, but Black kids still face huge barriers in Nova Scotia’s educational system. Wayne Desmond suggests more money for support workers and more funding for bursaries and scholarships could be a place to start addressing the achievement gap.

Likely this ensures a woman’s memory of the night before, of whom she met, whom she talked to and her knowledge of who raped her would vanish.
